Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg is regarded as one of the country’s most accomplished and high-profile women in business, and she has a new book coming out later this month on issues women face in the workplace.

11. Blazing a Trail -

Susan Stephenson is one of the most accomplished and highly visible women in the Memphis business community. She is the co-founder of Independent Bank, the city’s second-largest bank as ranked by assets and one that largely steered clear of the mortgage mess that dogged competitors during the financial bust.

12. Seminar Highlights Women and Biz -

Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, considered one of the most powerful women in business in the U.S., has a new book coming out next month on issues women face in the workplace.

In “Lean In,” the Facebook exec notes that although women long ago started representing 50 percent of U.S. college graduates, men still hold most of the leadership positions in the public and private sectors.

14. Lauer Appointed To CBIZ Women Board -

Linda Lauer, managing director and shareholder at CBIZ MHM Thompson Dunavant, has been appointed to the CBIZ Women’s Advantage Executive Board.

Lauer will serve a three-year term on the national board, adding to her leadership role with the local CBIZ MHM Thompson Dunavant Women’s Advantage, launched last year.

Here’s a roundup of what some of the city’s banks and bankers, investment professionals, and other financial services shops have been up to in recent weeks.

On the personnel front, Financial Federal recently appointed bank president William Tayloe to the board. Tayloe will be responsible for repositioning and expanding the company’s presence locally and elsewhere.

17. Snow Appointed to Industry Committee -

Danny Snow, managing director of CBIZ MHM LLC, has been appointed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to its tax executive committee.

18. Accounting Firm Supports Women Initiative -

Accounting and consulting firm CBIZ MHM Thompson Dunavant has launched a professional development and networking program for women executives in the firm’s Memphis office.

The new CBIZ Women’s Advantage Networking Circles program is a yearlong initiative comprised of a series of small group meetings and program action items. It represents the increasing reality that accounting is no longer heavily dominated by men and that the growing number of women in the field necessitates a greater focus on networking, leadership, mentoring and other skill-building opportunities for women.

19. Methodist Hospice Awarded $2,500 From Accountants -

CBIZ MHM Thompson Dunavant and Mayer Hoffman McCann PC have donated $2,500 to Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare’s Methodist Hospice Residence in honor of Chris McLean, chief financial officer and senior vice president of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. The gift was made on behalf of all registered participants who attended the firms’ recent continuing education seminar on health care reform.

20. Two Firms Acquire Thompson Dunavant -

Thompson Dunavant PLC, the largest locally owned accounting firm in Memphis, has been acquired by two separate firms that work together under what’s known as an alternative practice structure.

Cleveland-based CBIZ Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the tax side of Thompson Dunavant, effective Aug. 1. Mayer Hoffman McCann PC is acquiring the audit side of Thompson Dunavant. The Memphis office will be known as CBIZ MHM Thompson Dunavant. No layoffs or major changes will result from the acquisition.
