NEW YORK (AP) — Virgin America's next destination is Wall Street.

The California-based airline filed on Monday for an initial public offering of shares.

Virgin America Inc., which operates out of Los Angeles and San Francisco, flies to 22 airports in the United States and Mexico and has a fleet of 53 planes. It is known for offering a variety of perks on its jets, including live TV, movies, leather seats and purple mood lighting.

A similar history, a foundation in agriculture lending and growth potential attracted Arkansas-based Simmons First National Corp. to buy Community First Bancshares Inc. of Union City, Tenn., and its $1.9 billion subsidiary First State Bank, says Simmons’ Chairman and CEO George A. Makris.

13. Chamber: More People Working in Green Sector -

The Greater Memphis Chamber counts approximately 15,380 Memphians working in the green economy, with the largest group being 4,800 who work in clean energy.

The numbers are based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and in the headcounts by business, there are some corporate and brand names that might not be on the tip of your tongue when you hear the term green economy or green business.

The Saddle Creek location, the first in the Memphis area and the second in Tennessee, is expected to open in the fall.

Much of it was covered in these pages, including in recent days a U.S. Supreme Court justice eliciting chuckles from and sharing his constitutional philosophy with an audience of Memphis lawyers.

Canadian airline WestJet created a viral marketing sensation this holiday season. It was the second installment in what the brand has proclaimed an annual tradition.

Last Christmas, the brand converted one of its gates into the North Pole as a flash mob ensued, singing and dancing to “Deck the Halls.” The resulting video garnered more than a million views on YouTube.

Target is grappling with a data security nightmare that threatens to drive off holiday shoppers during the company's busiest time of year.

The nation's second largest discounter said Thursday that data connected to about 40 million credit and debit card accounts was stolen as part of a breach that began over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The three Nashville friends who started Batch Nashville, which delivers a surprise batch of local goods each month to subscribers’ doorsteps, are bringing the service to Memphis.

Nashville entrepreneur Sam Davidson said the group behind Batch Nashville had been looking to bring the model to another city in the state and looked for one “that had a growing sense of local pride, as well as a national brand.”

If you blink, you might miss a new restaurant opening along the Poplar Avenue corridor in East Memphis.

Over the last few months, several new restaurants have opened or are on the way around the heavily traveled Poplar corridor between Perkins Road and Kirby Parkway.

62. ‘Flight’ Takes Center Stage at Chamber Luncheon -

Southwest Airlines provided everyone in the nearly 1,000-person crowd at the Greater Memphis Chamber’s annual chairman’s luncheon Tuesday, Dec. 10, with a voucher worth $100 to use on a flight.

“Taking flight” was a theme of the chamber’s confab this year, which the Southwest promotion helped underscore. The popular carrier’s presence also was timely, since it launched new flights in Memphis about a month ago.

63. Holiday Weekend Gives a Boost to Auto Sales -

DETROIT (AP) – The holiday weekend was good to U.S. automakers, as November sales rose 9 percent to beat strong numbers from a year ago.

Sales ran at an annual rate of 16.4 million cars and trucks last month, making it the best rate of the year according to Autodata Corp.

MEMPHIS (AP) – An executive with the company that purchased Elvis Presley's intellectual property says it is discussing ways to expand the late rock and roll icon's brand and upgrades to the Graceland tourist attraction.

66. Leases Push Renaissance Center Near Capacity -

The Renaissance Center office building in East Memphis should be near capacity early next year, following a series of recent lease signings.

Financial Federal signed a lease on Tuesday, Nov. 20, to occupy 27,000 square feet on the first and second floors of the Renaissance Center, 1715 Aaron Brenner Drive. In addition to the new location, the growing financial firm will have signage atop the East Memphis office building along Poplar Avenue east of Interstate 240.

67. Elvis’ Intellectual Property Rights Sold -

Authentic Brands Group, a New York City intellectual property corporation, has bought Elvis Presley’s intellectual property and the right to operate Graceland from CORE Media Group, becoming the latest of four companies to own a majority share in the intellectual property assets of the late Memphis entertainer.

68. Overton Square Banner Hints at Music Return -

In the place where the marquee for Lafayette’s Music Room in Overton Square was once anchored, a new banner went up last week by Loeb Properties reading “The Music Is Back.”

Covered over with a blank tarp is another sign above it also by the Overton Square developers that bears a striking resemblance to the old marquee.
