18. Development Proposals Surface in Memphis' Pinch District -

A month after Bass Pro Shops opened at The Pyramid, development plans are surfacing in the Pinch District, including one for a new Front Street hotel.

Front Street Group LLC has applied for a special use permit for a 108-room, extended-stay hotel. It would be located directly across Front from The Pyramid’s east side on what is now a surface parking lot. It would include a 160-space parking structure on the rear of the property next to an existing alley.

Plans for a 108-room extended stay hotel on Front Street at the northeast corner of Jackson Avenue have been submitted to local planning officials for approval.

The special use permit application by Front Street Group LLC would be directly across Front Street from the eastern side of the Pyramid on what is now a surface parking lot and would include a 160-space parking structure on the rear of the property next to an existing alley.

20. Memphis-Based Monogram Foods Expanding Virginia Operation -

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe says a Memphis-based food company is adding a warehouse and logistics center to its Henry County manufacturing operation.

The governor said Monday that Monogram Food Solutions LLC will invest $7.2 million and create 101 new jobs. The company has been making meat snacks at the Henry County Patriot Centre Industrial Park since 2009.

21. TruGreen Selects East Memphis for New Headquarters -

TruGreen is moving more than 300 Memphis-area employees and its corporate headquarters to a 65,000-square-foot space at the Forum II office building in East Memphis, the company announced Friday.

The new headquarters, which will eventually house up to 400 of TruGreen’s corporate associates, will be part of the three-building Forum Office Complex, situated at the intersection of Kirby Parkway and Poplar Avenue.

AutoZone Inc.

AutoZone Inc. is one of the largest auto parts retailers and distributors in the U.S., with a store count of 5,476 as of Feb. 14. Since 1998, the company has repurchased $15.7 billion worth of its own shares. At the end of March, AutoZone continued its share buyback program with the authorization to buy back another $750 million in company stock. The company followed that news with plans to pursue a $650 million debt offering to be used for “general corporate purposes.” – Andy Meek

Vince DeGutis, a partner in Deloitte Tax LLP, has been named Deloitte’s Memphis managing partner.

27. Small, Midsize SUVs Drive April Auto Sales Gains -

Hot sales of small and midsize SUVs drove auto sales higher last month as General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Fiat Chrysler and Nissan all reported U.S. sales gains.

Several of the companies reported their best April totals in years. Overall, sales were mostly in line with analysts’ predictions of a 6 percent increase compared with a year ago. All automakers were scheduled to report sales on Friday.

Every so often, members of the Tennessee General Assembly attempt to amend the Professional Privilege Tax, a tax levied for having a license to operate a myriad of occupations.

Accountants, engineers, architects, real estate agents and others are subject to the tax. Recently, lawmakers wanted to extend the $400 tax to all real estate agents, no matter if they’re a broker or an associate broker.

Wolfchase Galleria has landed the city’s first Vans store.

Vans is a legendary “skateboard” brand that began making footwear in 1966 and now manufactures a popular line of men and women’s sneakers, skateboarding shoes, clothing and accessories.

It’s another blood-pressure-raising Tennessee legislative session – at least for a politically active group of moms concerned about their children potentially being shot.

This spring, lawmakers who want to loosen gun restrictions will get a morale boost from a three-day National Rifle Association convention. It coincides with consideration of several gun-related bills, including one that would eliminate the need for a firearms permit altogether.

It’s official. The Cheesecake Factory will open one of its signature restaurants at the Wolfchase Galleria.

Wolfchase owner Simon Property Group has applied for a $4.2 million building permit to erect a Cheesecake Factory inside the Cordova Mall at 2760 N. Germantown Parkway. The application said it was for “tenant improvement” and lists the tenant as The Cheesecake Factory. The architect is listed as Craig D. Oka and the engineer is listed as James Lascola.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) – At a taco shop in Southern California, milkshakes are served in mason jars and a chalkboard menu lists "The 1%er" made with lobster meat.

The logo is a pink skull and instead of buzzers, customers are given license plates so servers can identify them when bringing out orders.

44. Fruits and Vegetables Get a Star-Studded Marketing Push -

NEW YORK (AP) – What if cauliflower got the same type of marketing firepower as candy bars and potato chips?

A campaign being launched Thursday plans to put that premise to the test by enlisting celebrities including actress Jessica Alba and NBA star Stephen Curry to shill for fruits and vegetables.

45. Southaven Plans to Become Regional Shopping Destination -

Local officials are expecting the outlet mall under construction by Tanger and Poag Shopping Centers to make Southaven a regional business destination.

“We are 250 miles from six states and we will probably draw from all of them,” Carmen Kyle, executive director of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, told The Commercial Appeal. “This isn’t your local mall.”

NEW YORK (AP) – Expedia is buying rival online travel site Orbitz for approximately $1.33 billion, adding to the stable of brands it has snapped up recently in order to extend its reach and keep pace in the fiercely competitive travel-booking industry.

48. Super Bowl Ad Winners and Losers -

Think there was only one big game on Super Bowl Sunday? A typical NFL game has only 11 minutes of actual “game action” compared to 63 minutes of commercials, according to The Wall Street Journal. With 30 seconds of commercial airtime going for $4.5 million this year, it is clear that Super Bowl advertising is serious business, making for an equally interesting off-the-field game unfolding when the clock stops.

NEW YORK (AP) – McDonald's new boss must feel like a freshly crowned king under siege.

The world's biggest hamburger chain is facing an onslaught of competition, from better-burger chains like Five Guys to brands like Chipotle that tout the superior quality of their ingredients.

50. First Time Advertisers Gamble on Super Bowl Ads -

NEW YORK (AP) – More Super Bowl ad rookies will be trying to score a touchdown this Sunday.

There will be 15 new Super Bowl advertisers this year, the most since 2000, before the economy fell into what would be the first of two recessions since. Advertising experts say the rookie interest in Super Bowl ads is a positive sign that companies are feeling good in the most recent economic recovery.

56. Memphis Brand Enjoys Banner 2014 -

That thing that might best be described as the Memphis brand has enjoyed something of a banner year in 2014.

Businesses and entrepreneurs like Paper & Clay, Muddy’s Bake Shop and chocolatier Phillip Ashley Rix found themselves in the spotlight at various times in the past 12 months thanks to national media attention. The National Association of Food Journalists held its annual conference in Memphis. The city won plaudits for its bike lanes and its affordability.

Struggling retailer Sears says it remains committed to the Memphis market despite that its 800,000-square-foot distribution center in Olive Branch is being marketed for lease.

Exeter Property Group recently began marketing the once-powerful retailer’s massive distribution center at 10425 Ridgewood Drive in Olive Branch for lease, a signal to some local real estate officials that Sears – which is facing significant financial and market headwinds – could be closing the center.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Just a few years ago, early adopters of e-cigarettes got their fix by clumsily screwing together a small battery and a plastic cartridge containing cotton soaked with nicotine.

68. Budweiser Gives Clydesdales Holiday Pink Slip -

NEW YORK (AP) – Budweiser is putting its Clydesdales out to pasture for the holidays.

The country's No. 3 beer brand says the horses will not appear in its traditional holiday advertising this year, although they will be featured in spots promoting responsible drinking for the season. Anheuser-Busch InBev also noted the Clydesdales will be featured in its upcoming Super Bowl ads.

When he ran for Memphis mayor in the 2009 special election, A C Wharton Jr. said he was running to win, but also to change the nature of the city’s politics.

“This is what hurts us in politics today,” Wharton said five years later during the first fundraiser Monday, Nov. 17, in his campaign for re-election to a second full four-year term as mayor. “Everybody wants to stand up and say how is this going to go over. And if it doesn’t look like it’s going to go over well, they back down.”

71. Local Golf Courses Change Hands, Undergo Improvements -

Mirimichi is a Native American word that means “place of happy retreat.”

Now that global entertainment icon Justin Timberlake and his family have sold their happy local retreat, Mirimichi Golf Course, to a local group for $500,000, the new owners have an opportunity to increase the number of holes and tournaments played at the course, which underwent a massive $16 million renovation.
