An affiliate of Norcross, Ga.-based Safeway Group Inc. has paid $1.8 million for Cordova Ridge Shops, a retail shopping center at 1204 Houston Levee Road in unincorporated Cordova.

Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC has tapped attorney Lodie Biggs to be the new chair of the firm’s economic development team.

So your office lease is expiring and it’s time to make a decision about your space. 44. Mudbugs in March Returns to Court Square on March 16 -

Mudbugs in March will return for the third year to Court Square in Downtown Memphis on Saturday, March 16, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The day-long festival features an authentic Louisiana crawfish boil, drink specials, twisted mac from Hard Rock Café, a gumbo contest, barbecue from 2011 Memphis in May champion Fat Side Up, and live music from The Mason Jar Fireflies and FreeWorld.

The TJX Cos. Inc. has inked a substantial deal in Southeast Memphis, representing the largest industrial lease so far in 2013.

46. MAAR Reports February Home Sales -

Memphis-area home sales for February were flat from a year ago, with 934 total sales recorded in the Memphis Area Association of Realtors MAARdata property records database.

Total sales year to date were up 22 percent. Average sales price year over year rose 14.7 percent at $117,016.

47. Gang Tackle -

Cecil Dotson was a gang member until the day he died violently five years ago this month.

He also worked every day for 16 years as the maintenance man at the apartment complex where he lived until he moved, just before his death, into a rental house on Lester Street in Binghampton.

48. 2013 Political Season Begins -

There was a brief time last year when it looked like 2013 would be that rare political creature in Memphis politics – an off-election year.

A citywide sales tax increase referendum in the late summer or fall is probably going to continue the unbroken string of more than 10 consecutive years with at least a special election on a ballot locally. Outside Memphis there are municipal elections in Lakeland and Arlington.

Dewanna Lofton has accepted Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s appointment to public information officer for the city of Memphis.

56. AIA Memphis Director Given Honorary Membership -

Heather Baugus Koury was recently named Honorary AIA for The American Institute of Architects, the highest honor bestowed on a person outside the architecture profession.

Membership is granted only if the accomplishments of the nominee are truly outstanding and of national significance. During her 10-year tenure as executive director of AIA Memphis, Koury has enhanced the chapter’s programming and its involvement in community outreach programs, including the Distinguished Architects of the World speakers series, the Discovering Architecture summer day camp for high school students, and the Junior Girl Scout Architecture Badge Camp.

57. ‘Elvis: Live From Vegas’ to Open at Graceland -

A new exhibit called “Elvis: Live from Vegas,” is opening Tuesday, March 5, at Graceland and will allow audiences to experience Las Vegas through the eyes of Elvis Presley.

The exhibit will feature part of the 30-foot marquee Col. Parker had made to stand outside the New Frontier Hotel in 1956 and the first jumpsuit worn on-stage by Elvis in 1970.

58. EdR Purchases Interest in Elauwit Networks -

EdR – a Memphis-based owner, developer and manager of collegiate housing – has purchased a 10 percent interest in Elauwit Networks, a Charleston, S.C.-based provider of Internet access, high-definition video and telephone service.

59. Masson Joins Caissa Public Strategy -

Rick Masson has joined Caissa Public Strategy LLC as senior director, serving as a lead strategist on local and regional projects.

60. Design Review Board to Discuss Artspace, Bass Pro -

The Downtown Memphis Commission Design Review Board will discuss three major concepts at its Wednesday, March 6, meeting.

There is a construction application for Artspace Projects Inc.’s South Main Artspace Lofts, an adaptive reuse of the former United Warehouse at 138 St. Paul Ave. behind The Arcade Restaurant. The $12.5 million project will also include the new construction of a building over what is currently a parking lot with 44 live/work spaces, as well as more than 20,000 square feet of commercial space, which includes gallery space and an outdoor arts garden and performance plaza. Construction is planned to commence in October with an expected placed-in-service date in November 2014.

61. State Systems Installs Green Ballast Lighting -

State Systems Inc., a privately-owned total protection company based in Memphis, has installed Green Ballast Inc.’s light ballasts in its corporate headquarters and warehouse facility at 3755 Cherry Road.

64. Fogelman Properties Moves Headquarters to Triad II -

Memphis-based Fogelman Properties LLC has signed a lease for 12,000 square feet on the second floor of Triad Centre II, an 110,305-square-foot, Class A office building at 6060 Poplar Ave.

Susan Stephenson is one of the most accomplished and highly visible women in the Memphis business community. The 432-unit Jamesbridge apartments at 3689 James Road in Raleigh sold to a special servicer for $7.2 million after a foreclosure.

71. Local Projects in Running for Statewide Engineering Award -

Six Memphis-area projects are among those being considered in the 2013 Engineering Excellence Awards competition, presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee.

“Ridgeway Trace Retail Center” was completed by Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. for Weingarten Realty Investors. Surrounding the highly congested area near Ridgeway Trace, and traffic was improved by coordinating five traffic signals, adding lanes and widening roadways surrounding the development.

72. Imagine Vegan Café Landlord Ends Lease -

Imagine Vegan Café in Cooper-Young said the restaurant is moving and is soliciting ideas for vacant buildings.

“Our landlord decided to not renew our lease so we are now intensely looking for a new spot,” read a Friday, Feb. 15, Facebook post. “We ask that everyone please bear with us as things might be a little scattered over the next month or so. Our last day here in this spot is March 31st. We would like to stay in the Midtown area or maybe move over to Crosstown. Overton Square and out East are just out of our budget. If you have any specific ideas as to vacant buildings, please let us know.”

Starting this October, the Memphis-Mid-South Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be held at the Carriage Crossing lifestyle center in Collierville.

75. Startup Ground Zero -

For three days over the past week, Memphis was effectively ground zero for technologists, startup founders, investors and entrepreneurs from near and far.

DALLAS (AP) – US Airways CEO Doug Parker has landed the big merger he sought for years. Now the soon-to-be CEO of the new American Airlines has to make it work.

Planes need painting. Frequent flier programs have to be combined. And the new airline will still be weak in Asia and need to win back business travelers who have been drifting away to other airlines.

Several agents with Crye-Leike Realtors Inc. will host a free-to-the-public home buying and selling class on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Crye-Leike’s Hickory Ridge branch office, 3565 Ridge Meadow Parkway.

Southwest Tennessee Community College will hold a grand opening of the Inventory Locator Service Technology Center Feb. 26 at 10 a.m.

Two long-awaited Madison Avenue restaurants have filed for business licenses with the Shelby County Clerk’s Office.

Memphis Louie LLC applied for its Bar Louie location at 2125 Madison in Overton Square, the Midtown district being redeveloped by Loeb Properties Inc. The Addison, Texas-based franchise will occupy 5,982 square feet of the curved building on the southwest corner of Madison and Cooper Street. The space originally housed Playhouse on the Square in the 1970s.

88. MAA’s Net Income Rises in Fourth Quarter -

MAA reported a fourth quarter net income of $22.3 million, as compared to $18.8 million during the fourth quarter of 2011.

Net income results for the quarter ended Dec. 31 for the Memphis-based, apartment-only Real Estate Investment Trust included $3.2 million related to gains on the sale of one apartment community, while net income results for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2011, included $7.9 million related to gains on the sale of one apartment community.

Panera Bread Co. is moving along with the build-out of its new Midtown location.

The St. Louis-based fast-casual sandwich franchise recently filed for its business license at 1961 Union Ave. with the Shelby County Clerk’s Office. The 4,588-square-foot, freestanding space formerly housed Pizza Hut, which relocated west to the Belvedere Collection shopping center.

100. Kroger Poplar Plaza to Open March 20 -

Kroger’s new store in Poplar Plaza shopping center is scheduled for a March 20 opening.

The 81,500-square-foot building will back up to Prescott Street and face east. It will be Kroger’s biggest store in Memphis.
