1. Perl Retires From Airport Board -

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority will begin the next year with an empty chairman’s seat as Arnold Perl retired Thursday, Dec. 20, after 31 years of service, including 16 years as the committee’s chairman.

2. Schools Work To Grow Pool Of Engineers -

Last year President Barack Obama announced an “all-hands-on-deck strategy” to train 10,000 new American engineers every year.

Local schools like the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, Christian Brothers University and University of Memphis continue striving to attract new students to their engineering programs to train the next generation of engineers.

3. KIPP Memphis Hosts Dress for Success Day -

On Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Memphis middle school students from KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) DIAMOND Academy, 230 Henry St., will host Dress for Success Day, where students dressed in business attire will ask community leaders questions concerning their fields of work.

4. Checkpoint Redesign Moves Ahead at Airport -

An $11 million project that will transform the checkpoint area of Memphis International Airport’s busiest concourse cleared an important milestone Thursday with the selection of a designer.

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority at its March board of commissioners meeting awarded an $840,250 contract to The Horrell Group Architects/Self Tucker Architects Joint Venture, which will design the reconstruction and expansion of the Concourse B checkpoint.

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority will vote to award an engineering contract for the redesign of the Terminal B checkpoint to a joint venture between The Horrell Group Architects and Self Tucker Architects Inc. at today’s March board of commissioners meeting.

7. City Council to Consider Street Paving Contract -

Memphis City Council members today will vote on a resolution appropriating $3.8 million to APAC-Tennessee Inc. The money is to be used for resurfacing streets.

Council members also are expected to adopt a resolution accepting $1.1 million from the Tennessee Department of Transportation for the Coordinated Traffic Signal System Year One project.

8. Airline Woes Land At Memphis Int’l -

The rising cost of oil has sparked volatility in the airline industry, resulting in lower passenger and cargo traffic at Memphis International Airport for May, airport executives said Thursday at the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority’s monthly board meeting.
