1. Investment Group Buying Varsity Brands -

A private equity firm is in the process of leading an acquisition of Memphis-based Varsity Brands.

The latter is comprised of a portfolio of three school achievement brands – Herff Jones, BSN Sports and Varsity Spirit. Varsity Brands’ current leadership, under the terms of the proposed acquisition agreement, will get to both keep their current positions and join the investment group led by Charlesbank Capital Partners that’s buying the firm.

2. Archer-Malmo Hits Record-High Headcount -

In terms of its headcount, Memphis-based marketing communications agency archer-malmo is at a high-water mark.

The agency’s growth – in everything from its creative talent to its physical footprint and client roster – hasn’t slowed down this year. In the second quarter alone, for example, archer-malmo added seven new hires, bringing its employee roster to a record high of 160.

After several years working in Memphis for companies like Varsity Brands and Mahaffey Tent and Party Rentals and Mahaffey Fabric Structures, Beth Wilson’s mind began to turn to the possibility of agency work for the next phase of her public relations career.

For Memphis-based marketing communications agency archer-malmo, the story has been consistent, with a trajectory that seems to only go in one direction.

The firm, says CEO Russ Williams, is “on another big growth surge here.”

5. Herff Jones Inc. Chooses Chief Operating Officer -

Jeff Webb, founder and CEO of Memphis-based Varsity Brands Inc., will be the new president and chief operating officer effective Jan. 1 at Herff Jones Inc., a manufacturer of graduation-related items like yearbooks, rings, caps and gowns.

Memphis-based Varsity Brands Inc., a provider of education training and equipment for the school spirit market, has reached an agreement to merge with Herff Jones, a manufacturer and publisher of educational products, recognition awards and graduation-related items.

10. Skyline Grows Local Footprint on Vantech Dr. -

Skyline Exhibits MidSouth is expanding its presence at East Pointe Business Center.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based tradeshow exhibits company renewed its 9,958-square-foot lease at 3895 Vantech Drive, Suite 9, and expanded into an additional 3,524 square feet. The additional space will enable Skyline to assemble and store exhibits for clients.
