1. Airport Remodel Reflects Diminished Reality -

Major demolition work is underway at Memphis International Airport as construction crews raze the south end of the A Concourse, an initial step in a $114 million, multi-year modernization plan that reflects the new reality at the airport.

2. Southern Airways Moving Hub to Memphis International -

Southern Airways Express is moving its primary hub from Olive Branch Airport in DeSoto County to a private terminal located at Memphis International Airport.

The move, announced Tuesday, Sept. 16, will be effective Oct. 1 and is the result of customer needs and a recently completed deal with Signature Flight Support.

Southern Airways Express is expanding service from the Memphis area. The company announced Thursday, Sept. 4, new cities to be served from its hub at Olive Branch Airport in Olive Branch, Miss.

Southern is launching several new destinations, adding more flights to Atlanta and upgrading its Destin, Fla., service from seasonal to year-round.

12. Frontier Airlines Lands Memphis Return -

Frontier Airlines made a triumphant return to Memphis Friday, March, 7, complete with pilots and passengers wearing Elvis sunglasses.

The Frontier jet from Denver – with “Hector” the otter emblazoned on its tail – arrived at Gate C7 at Memphis International Airport just before 1:30 p.m., and passengers were greeted with a celebratory atmosphere, including light jazz music and balloons.

13. Wolf River Greenway Part of Transportation Funding -

Plans for a fifth leg of the Wolf River Greenway in North Memphis are getting $271,305 in state funding awarded through the local Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The 1.5-mile segment along McLean Boulevard from Nedra Avenue to Chelsea Avenue is part of the list of 15 “transportation alternatives” projects totaling $2.6 million announced this week by the MPO, a regional planning organization that takes in Shelby and DeSoto counties, and parts of Fayette and Marshall counties.

14. Southern Airways Raising Capital for Growth -

Memphis-based carrier Southern Airways is raising a new round of capital to fund its plans for growth across the company’s five-state footprint.

Southern Airways Corp. chairman Stan Little said the next round of funding will help the company secure more aircraft, expand its routes and add other new resources. To date, funding came initially from private Mississippi investors, but the next level is being considered by a group of venture capitalists out of New York.

15. Southern Airways Adds Four Destinations -

Southern Airways Express announced Thursday, Aug. 1, it is adding four nonstop destinations from Memphis, bringing the total to eight.

Shortly after Labor Day, the Memphis-based airline will add Atlanta, Birmingham, Ala., Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss., and Knoxville, Tenn., to its list of nonstop destinations from Memphis. Southern Airways Express will continue its current routes to Destin and Panama City Beach, Fla., Gulf Shores, Ala., and New Orleans. The airline has hubs in Memphis and Destin.

16. Cocktail Napkin Reality -

North Mississippi attorney Stan Little’s private plane had become so popular with friends they joked that he should start his own regional airline.

“Anybody that knows someone who owns a plane wants to borrow it,” he said. “Once you have done that once, you never want to go back through an international airport hub ever again.”
