A number of local businesses are offering hope to the city’s chronically unemployed in the form of internships that provide real-world, on-the-job training.

The program is coordinated by HopeWorks, a 22-year-old nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping poor and chronically unemployed Memphians find steady work.

The Memphis hotel and lodging market is experiencing increased demand and rising occupancy rates thanks to no new hotel construction and flat supply.

“Memphis is pretty much a mid-scale market, and the market is doing better right now than it was at this time last year,” said Chuck Pinkowski of the hotel consulting firm Pinkowski & Co. “With the improving economic situation, both commercial and leisure travel are coming back.”

26. Home Prices Falling in Most Major US Cities -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Home prices are falling in most major U.S. cities, and at least 10 major markets are at their lowest point since the housing bubble burst.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city index shows price declines in 19 cities from January to February. The index fell for the seventh straight month. Prices fell at a faster rate in 11 markets in February compared with the previous month.

The Garden View Apartments at 1127 Whitaker Drive in Whitehaven has sold for $900,000 to a Springfield, Ill., investor called Pope’s Select Properties LLC. Built in 1963, the 92-unit, 64,809-square-foot complex sits on 6.75 acres on the south side of Whitaker, just west of Elvis Presley Boulevard.

32. City Closer to Injecting Foreclosure Relief -

The city of Memphis has checked off one more thing it has to do so $11.5 million in federal aid can be deployed in neighborhoods hit hard by foreclosure.

The city’s Division of Housing and Community Development has issued a request for qualifications, or RFQ, for firms that want to apply for a piece of the millions in housing-related aid coming to Memphis.

Loeb Properties Inc. recently grew its retail unit with the purchase of eight shopping centers for $12.7 million, a move that brings Loeb's retail portfolio to 104 properties.

The shopping centers were sold by contractors Stewart Austin and Michael Weiss as a package deal. But buying eight shopping centers in one transaction from one seller is not the norm, said Bob Loeb, president of Loeb Properties. Usually, the company buys one property at a time.
