7. Time to Improvise -

The past couple of years have been brutal for homebuilders as demand for new houses plummeted and companies did what they could to cope.

2009 was especially bad for Shelby County builders, who filed just 529 new home permits all year, a 43.7 percent decline from 940 permits in 2008 and a staggering 80 percent decline from 2,643 permits in 2007, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

Tommy Byrnes of Byrnes Ostner Investments Inc. will serve as 2010 president of the Memphis Area Home Builders Association, the group’s executive director, Don Glays, said this week.

9. More Cash Available for First-Time Buyers -

The Memphis Area Home Builders Association is launching a program that will allow first-time homebuyers to borrow their down payments from the organization’s nonprofit division and repay it from their $8,000 federal tax credits.

10. Gibbons Joins National District Attorneys Board -

Shelby County District Attorney William L. Gibbons has been chosen to be Tennessee's representative on the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) board of directors. Gibbons was chosen by his peers throughout the state. Gibbons also is a member of the board of the American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI), the nonprofit research and program development arm of the NDAA.
