Sprouts Farmers Market, a fast-growing specialty grocery chain, has set an opening date for its first Memphis-area store.

Phoenix-based Sprouts, which replicate the look and feel of an indoor farmers market and specialize in fresh, organic and healthy food, will open a 28,000-square-foot store in a former Kroger at 9050 U.S. 64 in Lakeland on May 13.

Front St. Downtown, according to several people with knowledge of the transaction. The Shelby County Assessor of Property’s 2014 appraisal for the 340,000-square-foot building is $24 million.

The Memphis coffee scene keeps expanding, thanks to additions like Dr. Bean’s Coffee and Tea Emporium.

That’s a new coffee shop a few months away from opening Downtown at 72 Madison Ave., across from The Madison Hotel. The venture is a partnership between Dr. Albert Bean and Charles Billings who plan to take a three-story building previously used for office space and which is now vacant, renovating the ground floor and basement for use as a retail coffee house and roastery.

Memphis City Council members vote Tuesday, Jan. 6, on the creation of a Beale Street Tourism Development Authority to oversee the future of the entertainment district.

The proposal by Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. sets up a nine-member body appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council to issue bonds for construction projects in the district, levy fees to pay off the debt and to make lease agreements with tenants.

A New Year’s eve letter from Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. indicates that when spring crowds begin to reach parking capacity in Overton Park, the park’s greensward will be used for overflow automobile parking at the Memphis Zoo.

2013: The city of Memphis was preparing to take day-to-day control of the Beale Street Entertainment District with the court settlement marking the formal exit of Performa Entertainment, the developer and manager of the district since its reopening in 1983. Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. announced the Downtown Memphis Commission would run the district until a new developer and manager could be selected by the city and a future direction agreed on. The DMC continues to run the district a year later.

The 8,900-square-foot Collierville Station retail center along West Poplar Avenue has sold for $600,000.
