1. Baptist CEO Set to Retire Next May -

Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. President and CEO Stephen Reynolds will retire next May, with Jason Little, Baptist’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, taking over as the hospital system’s next president and CEO.

2. Cordova Building Sees Solid Leasing Activity -

The commercial building at 584 N. Germantown Parkway in Cordova has recently seen strong leasing activity. Advanced Prosthetics and Orthotics LLC, which opened in 2004 and provides prosthetic limbs and orthotics to support or supplement weakened or abnormal joints or limbs, inked a lease to occupy the 4,000 square feet of space that once housed a Baptist Memorial Health Care minor medical center. Last year, the center signed a 5,050-square-foot lease at the former Blockbuster space in Trinity Commons, 670 N. Germantown.

3. Medical Supply Program Facing Delays, Scrutiny -

Less than a week before an effort to rein in billions of dollars in Medicare spending on home medical equipment is set to kick in, members of Congress and medical supply programs are pushing to delay the plan, saying some of the process has been mishandled and that the process lacks transparency.

4. Local Organizations Help Homeless Community -

Baptist Operation Outreach and Soles4Souls offered assistance to those less fortunate, providing health care services, food and clothing to the homeless, at annual events held during the Thanksgiving holiday.

5. White Joins BankTennessee As Mortgage Specialist -

Judy Sulton White has joined BankTennessee as a mortgage loan specialist. White has worked in the mortgage industry for 30 years and will focus on new-home financing options, mortgage refinances and custom construction loans.

6. SBA Honors Graduates of e200 Program -

The U.S. Small Business Administration recently honored new graduates of its Emerging 200 Initiative, or e200, at a ceremony at Southwest Tennessee Community College.

SBA identified 14 inner-city businesses from Memphis that demonstrated a high potential for growth. The agency then provided the small businesses with a free, six-month course of in-depth business education focused on organization management, growth strategies and management, market development and strategic planning.

7. Spears Prosthetics & Orthotics Gives New Movement to Amputees -

When Ulysses Moore of Memphis lost the lower part of his right leg to gangrene several years ago, Spears Prosthetics & Orthotics – the Mid-South’s largest privately owned facility of its type – equipped him with a prosthesis and the training to increase his mobility.

8. Owner of Cordova Company Admits Medicare Fraud -

Michael E. Cohen, the owner of a Cordova orthotics company, has pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicare and is scheduled for sentencing in December.

He waived his right to indictment and entered into a plea agreement last month. U.S. Attorney Larry Laurenzi filed a charge against Cohen on July 23, following a more than year-long investigation.

9. Memphis R&D Team Reinvents Dr. Scholl’s Brand -

The Memphis-based research and development team behind Dr. Scholl’s has scored another hit with the latest innovation for the more than 100-year-old brand of foot care products.

Kiosks that allow shoppers to step onto a sensor that measures their feet, identifies pressure points and recommends the proper insole are now up nationwide at major retailers. The 3,000-plus Dr. Scholl’s Custom Fit Orthotic Centers are on track to number 4,200 by October.

10. Orthotics Firm Suspected of Bilking $1.5M From Medicare -

Federal agents seized the bank accounts of a Cordova orthotics company because the money was allegedly gained from mail, wire and health care fraud, according to a court document filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee.

11. Feds Seize Money From Cordova Orthotics Company -

The federal government has seized more than $600,000 from NewGen Advance Orthotics Lab Inc. of Cordova and the company is fighting to get the money back.

12. Dozens Arrested in Medicare Fraud Busts Across US -

MIAMI (AP) - Federal authorities arrested more than 30 suspects, including doctors, and were seeking others in a major Medicare fraud bust Wednesday in New York, Louisiana, Boston and Houston, targeting scams such as "arthritis kits" – expensive braces that many patients never used.

13. Artificial Limb and Brace Fitters Under Greater Scrutiny -

State and national regulators are putting the fitters of artificial limbs and body braces under greater scrutiny because of fraud and an increased demand for services.

James P. Rogers of Chattanooga, president of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, welcomes the scrutiny. The public needs to be protected from unqualified and unscrupulous individuals, he said, as the devices become more complex. Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, an aging population and high rates of diabetes are causing more people to need prosthetics (artificial limbs) and orthotics (braces).
