The Indie Memphis Film Festival has set a date for this year’s series.

The festival will hold its 17th edition on Halloween weekend – Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 – and will increase its presence in Overton Square by including the new Hattiloo Theatre, which opens mid-summer.

This year’s Indie Memphis Film Festival will again offer a slate of programming tied to the concept of innovation and include guest speakers such as the president of the multimedia news organization The Onion, as well as presentations that complement the festival’s film offerings.

4. Indie Memphis Unveils New Festival Lineup -

The lineup for this year’s 16th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival is set.

During a preview party at the new Hi-Tone Café Thursday night, director Craig Brewer lifted the curtain on the slate of films being shown at this year’s festival, which kicks off on Halloween. The four-day event runs from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3 and includes more than 45 feature films that will be shown on five screens in the Overton Square district.

One of Pat Halloran’s favorite memories of The Orpheum Theatre Memphis happened back in 1986, when he got the chance to kick around town with Cary Grant for three days.

Go by Overton Square during lunch or at night, and the place is usually overflowing with visitors – some who want lunch, dinner or a libation, and some who come just to enjoy the simple pleasure of people-watching.

Overton Square planners are focusing on “the spaces between” and making the area more comfortable for pedestrians while increasing density and expecting more traffic in the arts, theater and retail district.

8. Malco Theatres Opening New Locations -

Malco Theatres is in the midst of a growth spurt.

The Memphis-based movie chain has acquired a shuttered 10-screen movie theater and outdoor amphitheater in Oxford, Miss. It’s in Oxford Commons, a 480-acre mixed-use commercial, residential, hospitality and entertainment development in the North Mississippi town.

Hattiloo Theatre is preparing to break ground on its build-to-suit facility at Overton Square in Midtown within the next 45 days, as it finalizes some last-minute financing and lines up subcontractors.

Green Line Marketing Group has outgrown its East Memphis office space due to its expanded staff and client roster.

The boutique agency has signed a 2,000-square-foot lease in Racquet Club Plaza, where it will relocate from its three 350-square-foot executive suites in Clark Tower by the end of the month.

14. Loeb: City Should Increase Investment in Urban Core -

The relevance of Overton Square is that it’s one of many initiatives the city has in place to make Memphis a better place and a city of choice for the millennial generation.

Seventy-seven percent of those born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s want to live in the urban core and to drive less.

This year, more than 86,500 bows were sold during Malco Theatres’ five-week holiday campaign “Wrapped with Love.”

17. New Malco Theatre Coming to Olive Branch -

Memphis-based Malco Theatres is building a new 12-screen theater in Olive Branch.

The movie chain completed initial site work several years ago but decided to shelve the development when the recession hit. The company announced this week it’s resumed construction on the project with plans for completion by the middle of next year.

There was bicycle-powered smoothie preparation, an aerial circus-style art show, Beale Street Flippers, live music outside, a disc jockey inside, and food and drinks from Downtown restaurants and suppliers.

21. Malco Theatres, YoLo Form Partnership -

Malco Theatres and YoLo Frozen Yogurt have teamed up to offer self-serve frozen yogurt at the Paradiso Cinema and Malco Smyrna Cinema locations.

Beginning Monday, July 16, patrons at both locations will have a new dessert option to accompany the current concession menu at the movies. Malco Theatres converted space in both locations that was formerly an Internet cafe into a “mini” YoLo Frozen Yogurt Shop.

The blue banner that hung until recently at the curved building at Cooper Street and Madison Avenue and read “Returning in 2012” will soon ring true for Overton Square and its developer, Loeb Properties Inc.

23. Luncheon To Honor’s City’s Cinematic Stars -

Film director Craig Brewer, “Undefeated” star Bill Courtney, and Memphis and Shelby County Film and Television Commissioner Linn Sitler are among those who’ll be honored Wednesday, May 9, as Carnival Memphis salutes the Mid-South’s movie and film industry during its annual Business & Industry Salute Luncheon.

Memphis City Council’s approval for spending $16 million to improve Midtown’s Overton Square marked a milestone for neighborhood supporters, grassroots leaders and financial stakeholders – especially Loeb Properties Inc.

A four-day event, featuring test drives of some of the Toyota Motor Sales’s best-selling vehicles, is coming to Memphis this weekend.

Malco Theatres Inc. will partner in the National “Gold Heart Campaign” to benefit The Variety Club.

Throughout the month of February moviegoers may purchase $2 collectible “Madagascar” Gold Heart pins at any Malco Theatre. All money raised will go to the U.S. Variety Club to be distributed to children’s organizations within the theater’s community.

37. Malco Theatres to Kick Off ‘Wrapped With Love’ Campaign -

Malco Theatres will begin its “Wrapped with Love” campaign on Thanksgiving Day.

The campaign will run through Dec. 25 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Patrons at all 33 Malco Theatre locations will be able to buy handmade bows for $1. Each bow is made from 24 frames of film, which is equivalent to one second of a movie. Patients of St. Jude and their families participated in the creation of the bows at the hospital.
