1. Graceland Hotel Designed by Memphis Talent -

When designing a hotel that effectively expands the footprint of the most famous home in Memphis, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the design team for the project is stacked with local talent.

Memphis-based architecture firm Hnedak Bobo Group worked with Elvis Presley Enterprises for years to study and research the hotel project, which entails building a 450-room resort-style hotel called the Guest House at Graceland north of Presley’ Graceland mansion in Whitehaven.

2. American Marketing Association Memphis Chapter Preps for New Events -

The Memphis chapter of the American Marketing Association is gearing up to be a hub of new networking and educational opportunities for local marketing professionals in the city.

Along with the finalization of its Memphis charter, the organization has elected a new board of directors packed with experienced marketing leaders from the area. The chapter also plans to offer “unexpected, unique and creative” benefits to help it stand out from traditional professional organizations.

3. Flowers Recognized With AIA Award -

Memphis attorney and architect Josh Flowers has been honored with the American Institute of Architects’ Young Architects Award.

Flowers, the in-house legal counsel for Hnedak Bobo Group, served as AIA Memphis chapter president in 2012. He founded and currently hosts the Emerging Professionals Leadership program, which connects young architects with AIA Fellows. As the knowledge director for the AIA National Young Architects Forum, Flowers launched “YAF Fireside Chats” at the 2013 national convention.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center hosted a public information session on the development of its new campus plan last week at the Student-Alumni Center Dining Hall on its Midtown campus at 800 Madison Ave.

6. UT Health Science Center to Outline New Campus Master Plan -

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is set to revamp its campus, and the school will host a public information session on the development of a new master plan Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Student-Alumni Center Dining Hall, 800 Madison Ave.

7. Webb Builds on Reputation of Integrity, Efficiency -

Long before the county and city would cleave their school systems, Shelby County Schools saw unprecedented growth as more and more residents filled the neighborhoods that seemed to appear overnight like springtime daffodils.

Architectural firms that were thrown into a deep, dark hole following the Great Recession are finally starting to see light again.

The only worry is that the light at the end of the tunnel is another recession-driven train, threatening to again pummel the architectural community.

Ever since he was a child, Brad Martin, chairman of private investment firm RBM Venture Co. and retired chairman and CEO of Saks Inc., was attracted to the large wooded property at 1023 Cherry Road near Park Avenue in East Memphis.

10. Mark Weaver Elevated to Fellow of AIA -

Mark Weaver, principal with Hnedak Bobo Group, was recently elevated to a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

A past president of AIA Memphis and AIA Tennessee, Weaver was recognized for advancing the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training and practice.

12. Prodigi Arts has Designs on Growing its Business -

Local animation and motion graphics company Prodigi Arts is preparing for aggressive expansion over the next two years.

Prodigi, which has been servicing prominent businesses in the city over the last five years, provides animation and 2D/3D graphics for advertising, presentations, explanations, education, entertainment, in-house training, prototype development and company mascots.

13. AIA Honors Industry’s Local Activity -

Despite hard times, there has been a whirlwind of activity in Memphis’ design community over the past year.

That’s the message Josh Flowers, general counsel at Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. and president of the Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, gave Saturday, March 31, at the annual Celebration of Architecture Gala and 2012 Design Awards at Circuit Playhouse, 66 S. Cooper St.

The long anticipated opening of bleu restaurant & lounge in Downtown’s The Westin Memphis Beale Street was shaped from the ground up, starting with community input.

The new eatery replaces the former Sole Restaurant & Raw Bar across from FedExForum at 221 S. Third St.

15. Memphis Architecture Firms Recognized for Excellence -

The Memphis chapter of the American Institute of Architects honored the city’s top firms for their contributions to excellence in design during the annual Celebration of Architecture Gala April 16 at Ballet Memphis, 7950 Trinity Road.

16. Memphis Architect Named AIA President -

Mark Weaver, architect and principal/partner at Memphis-based Hnedak Bobo Group Inc., has assumed the role of president of The American Institute of Architects Tennessee.

17. Hnedak Bobo Working on $27M Calif. Casino -

Memphis-based Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. and Las Vegas-based Cleo Design are currently completing design for a $27 million, 245,000-square-foot renovation of the Tribe’s existing Sycuan Casino in San Diego.

The University of Memphis will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the new University Center today at 10 a.m. The day will include the opening of Tiger Dining’s Union Food Court and later, music and entertainment from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

21. GSL Files Permit For New Building -

Grace St. Luke’s (GSL) Episcopal School has filed a $7.5 million permit application with the city-county Department of Construction Code Enforcement to build a 42,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility at 250 Lemaster St., which is on the southeast corner of Lemaster and Linden Avenue on its Midtown campus.

22. Hottel Appointed Dean At UT College of Dentistry -

Dr. Timothy L. Hottel has been appointed dean for the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry.

Hottel currently serves as executive associate dean and chief financial officer, associate dean for academic and financial affairs, division chief for primary care, professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, and interim chair of the Department of Cariology and Restorative Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University in Ford Lauderdale, Fla.

24. Hnedak Bobo Group Grows Firm With Merger -

The principals who formed the architecture and design firm Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. nearly 30 years ago have merged with Bullock Smith & Partners, giving the longtime Memphis company 30 new employees, two additional offices and a unified front in this difficult economy.

25. BankTennessee Promotes Wilson To Senior VP of Marketing -

Julia Wilson has been promoted to senior vice president of marketing at BankTennessee. Wilson has been with the company since 1995. She has received several awards, including a Golden Pyramid from the Promotional Products Association International and an ADDY Award from the Memphis Advertising Federation.

26. Hnedak Bobo OfficesSell for $5.3 Million -      New York-based Lexington Strategic Asset Corp. has bought two adjoining office buildings from Memphis-based Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. for $5.3 million.
