7. Owner Files Loan on 3 Gas Stations -

After receiving two convenience stores and gas stations in quitclaim deeds, the new owner filed a $2 million loan on those properties and one other.

The entity, N & S LLC, doing business as Hwy 64 BP, filed the deed of trust July 16 through Renasant Bank. Nizar Lalani Sr. signed the deed as member of the borrower, and he is also related to the ownership entities that quitclaimed the properties.

8. Regional One Health Expands Footprint -

In the last year, Regional One Health has added about 100 employees and its new name.

Of course, for about three decades it was known as The Regional Medical Center at Memphis – or simply The MED. That officially changed back on Feb. 26 when Regional One Health became the new name for the Shelby County Health Care Corp. and the “umbrella” name for the hospital.

9. Busy Street -

Evidence for the attractiveness of Downtown’s South Main neighborhood can be found in any of several corners.

One example is at 314 S. Main St., where Café Pontotoc opened its doors about two weeks ago. Owners Milton and Cherie Lamb wanted to establish a comfortable neighborhood bar that serves wine, local beers and small plates in a setting where patrons get used to coming in to unwind.

10. Downtown Stakeholders Talk Office Space, Riverfront -

Office space is moving east in Memphis for now.

But the head of the Downtown Memphis Commission says that doesn’t appear to be a long-term trend.

“I don’t disagree that that’s happened. I disagree that that will continue to happen over the next 20 or 30 years,” Downtown Memphis Commission president Paul Morris said on the WKNO-TV program “Behind the Headlines.” “If you look at it from the longer-term perspective across America, more and more offices are returning to downtown areas.”

The “Chef Jenn” lines of frozen seafood products from Memphis chef Jennifer McCullough are being picked up by East Coast grocery store chain Harris Teeter and also by Walmart in several regions.

13. Bankruptcy Filings Drop Below 3,000 -

For the first time since 2011, the number of Memphis-area bankruptcies filed in the second quarter dropped below 3,000.

Between April 1 and June 30, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Tennessee saw 2,959 bankruptcies in which the person or business listed a Shelby County address. That’s a 6.4 percent decrease from the 3,164 filed during the second quarter of 2013, according to The Daily News Online, memphisdailynews.com.

15. Shelby County Mortgage Market Sees Modest Gain -

Shelby County mortgage lenders share a few common trends at the moment, as the area’s mortgage market begins to shake off the wintry chill of the first quarter.

Many of them report robust purchase mortgage activity, as refinances plummet to small fractions of their business. As a result of the demand, many of those lenders also have been adding mortgage officers to their ranks and plan to continue doing so.

A longtime third-party logistics company is on the move.

Pathmark Transportation Co., which was started in 1984 as a subsidiary of petroleum marketing company Pathmark International before becoming a national logistics provider, has signed a new lease for 3,800 square feet at the i-bank Tower on Poplar Avenue in East Memphis.

19. After the Flood -

When the flood water and debris from Nonconnah Creek receded last week from the Wheel Estate Mobile Home Park on East Brooks Road, it exposed a set of familiar issues for such properties in Memphis.

20. Allen Gas Plant Would Be Historic Shift -

A new natural gas power plant to be built in the shadow of the Allen Steam Plant in Southwest Memphis got its first reviews Tuesday, July 8, at a Tennessee Valley Authority forum Downtown.

The session at Central Station featured lots of questions from citizens about the historic shift proposed, as well as some support for the conversion and some criticism.

Sharky’s Gulf Grill, an upscale seafood establishment in East Memphis, has closed its doors.

Sharky's Gulf Grill LLC, which opened in 2009 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, closed the restaurant in the 6,300-square-foot building at 6201 Poplar Ave. in East Memphis, which is prime commercial real estate space.

23. Malone Center Owner Files $4.1 Million Loan -

The owner of the 23.7-acre Malone Distribution Center near the intersection of East Raines Road and Lamar Avenue in Oakhaven has filed a $4.1 million loan on the industrial property.

Cobalt Industrial REIT II filed the deed of trust with absolute assignment of leases and rents, security agreement and fixture filing July 1 through Wells Fargo Bank NA. The deed encompasses parcels at 4366 Malone Road, 4406 Malone and 4436 Malone.

But Anita Vaughn, CEO and administrator at Baptist Women’s Hospital, managed to persuade Dr. Fawn Lewis to come to Memphis to be the hospital system’s first general pediatric surgeon.

As the week begins, political leaders of both parties and across several generations will gather in East Tennessee for the funeral of former U.S. Sen. Howard Baker.

40. Lewellen Honored As City Manager of Year -

Collierville town administrator James Lewellen has been named the 2014 City Manager of the Year by the Tennessee City Management Association.

The award was given Tuesday, June 24, at the association’s annual conference in Chattanooga.

41. June 27-July 3: This week in Memphis history -

2013: Groundbreaking for the renovation of the Lee House in Victorian Village as a bed and breakfast. To symbolize the transition of the home built in 1841, members of the Lee family gathered beside the house and rang the large bell in the side yard.
The property is one of several homes of James Lee, who ran the Lee line of riverboats on the Mississippi River. The Lee House LLC – a partnership that includes Jose Velazquez, J.W. Gibson and Kathy Buckman Gibson – invested more than $2 million in restoring the house, which opened in April. Among the features is a 114-year old Steinway piano in the home’s living room.

42. Hollingsworth Buys Mississippi Industrial Property -

The Hollingsworth Cos., which operates a prominent industrial development company with holdings across the South, has acquired an industrial building in Senatobia, Miss.

Clinton, Tenn.-based Hollingsworth recently acquired the 198,450-square-foot building at 795 Shands Bottom Road in Senatobia from BMW.

43. Raymond James Recommits to Downtown -

Raymond James is extending its commitment to Downtown Memphis, where the investment firm will remain a key part of the city’s skyline for at least another decade.

The firm has reached a deal with Parkway Properties to extend its lease on the Raymond James Tower at 50 N. Front St. until March of 2024.

44. Heart of Arlington -

When Sandy Brewer and her family moved more than eight years ago from Cordova to a turn-of-the-century home just two blocks from Arlington’s Depot Square, she said it felt like taking a step back in time.

Collierville town administrator James Lewellen has been named the 2014 City Manager of the Year by the Tennessee City Management Association.

46. FanBank Shop Local Program Launches in Memphis -

A new shop local rewards program has launched in Memphis, one that brings a different approach to the efforts featuring loyalty cards and aggressive discounting that tend to be the norm.

FanBank, on the other hand, is designed to connect customers with local businesses using an approach similar to that of an airline or hotel rewards program. Participating consumers leave their information on file, and then they go about their shopping habits as normal, incrementally benefiting from the program along the way.

Last week, the New Yorker published an article about how Disruptive Innovations have failed and how the theory is bogus. The parking controversy at Overton Park is probably the best place to begin to think more about what happens when we get our wish for more density within the parkways.

More people living and working or going to the same area or park, in this case, means change on a lot of different levels.

The park has been crowded, but not as crowded as expected given the political tempest over parking on Overton’s greensward.

A charter school operator has inked a lease for space on Winchester Road in Hickory Hill.

Gestalt Community Schools has leased 57,000 square feet of space at 5360 Winchester Road inside the Mendenhall Square shopping center.

56. Brady: Zoo Parking Solution Difficult -

The president of the Memphis Zoo says solutions to the parking problem at Overton Park won’t be easy and likely will involve change for all of the park’s institutions.

“Overton Park is a community park. … It’s clearly not a neighborhood park,” Chuck Brady told The Daily News in his first interview since protests began in late May over the zoo’s use of the park greensward for overflow parking. “It’s easy to define the problem. But it’s difficult to carve out a solution.”

58. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? -

The most commonly cited indicator of complacency, the VIX or volatility index, recently hit a low of 10.73, a level not seen since early 2007.

Now a low VIX does not in any way signal an imminent crisis, but it does indicate a very complacent consensus susceptible to even slightly unpleasant surprises. Sadly, when the markets cannot find a reason to sell, Murphy ’s Law always provides one.

61. Crescent Club Undergoes Anniversary Overhaul -

The Crescent Club, a member of the ClubCorp family of clubs, is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation.

In recognition of its 25-year anniversary, the club overhaul will include a new bar, dining space, multimedia office center, as well as a new lounge and lobby. The work is scheduled to be finished by early July. Located in East Memphis on the top floor of the Crescent Center, the Crescent Club offers formal and informal dining, five private dining rooms with videoconference capabilities, and an atrium and courtyard for larger groups.

62. Departing PDS Head Says Education Needs ‘Disruption’ -

The departing headmaster of Presbyterian Day School says American education needs more of a revolution than evolution.

Lee Burns is leaving the East Memphis private school to become head of school at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., after 14 years in Memphis. He was the keynote speaker Wednesday, June 11, for the second day of the Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence’s two-day summer conference on the PDS campus.

63. Graceland Hotel Passes Crucial Hurdle -

A new hotel near Graceland has passed a key regulatory hurdle.

The Memphis-Shelby County Land Use Control Board approved a proposal from Elvis Presley Enterprises to build a 450-room hotel on the same side of Elvis Presley Boulevard as the historic Graceland mansion, one of the city’s top tourism sites.

In the 1970s, Bill Latham worked as a waiter in Jackson, Miss., at the TGI Fridays restaurant there, one of the first few locations of the chain.

The way Mark Luttrell sees it, his campaign for mayor in 2014 is different than his campaign four years ago because then he was challenging an incumbent and now he is the incumbent.

68. Shelby County Home Sales Down, Prices Up in May -

Shelby County experienced a drop in home sales in May compared to the same month last year and also from April.

However, prices continued their upward surge last month as the supply of available homes continued to dwindle.

MEMPHIS FROM THE BEACH. I’m on vacation, but I’ll be home soon, and here are some thoughts about that I first shared a couple of years ago.

Right now, I’m probably on the beach, keeping the sand out of my beer and helping my dogs stare at the ocean. It’s a big ocean – big enough to help you forget whatever you were so worried about a couple of days ago. Staring at it properly is a big job – big enough that making sure you don’t miss the next dolphin breaking the surface or the next crab making a break for it is more important than whatever you were doing last week. That’s pretty much the way the dogs look at it, too. We don’t miss a thing.

72. SEC Network Poised to Take Over -

Wading in … and wondering what an eventual deal between the SEC Network and DirecTV will mean for me. Will my bill go up 10 percent? Fifteen percent? Twenty percent?

Will I have to drink only domestics in brown bottles? Give up the ESPN of coffee (Star----)?

73. Autobahn Garage Owner Looks to Sell -

When The Chinese Connection Dub Embassy takes the stage in Handy Park on Beale Street Friday, June 6, the band’s reggae beat and style will be something new for a park that has seen everything from church choirs to jug bands to blues bands playing “Mustang Sally” and similar hits for tourists.

Walter Bailey is the only serving Shelby County Commissioner who was part of the 1970s debate on the commission about what to do with the farmland that was the old Shelby County Penal Farm.

80. FedEx Seeks Office Space as Needs Shift -

FedEx Corp. is currently looking for 25,000 square feet of office space in the Memphis market, according to several real estate brokers.

81. Towering Progress -

The shell of the newest addition to the East Memphis office skyline is complete, setting the stage for exterior work on International Paper’s new building to begin.

“The structure has been built and now they’re starting from the ground up putting the skin on the building,” said Matthew Marzolf, director of development for Highwoods Properties Inc. in Memphis.

Early screenings reduce lung cancer’s mortality rate. Dr. Benny Weksler is sure of that much.

“I don’t think there’s a debate in terms of the effectiveness; the debate is how are we going to pay for it?” said Weksler, chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and also UTHSC’s first Eastridge-Cole Professor.

84. Kyocera Inks ProLogis Park Lease Renewal -

ProLogis has landed a major renewal at one of its industrial parks.

Kyocera Document Solutions America Inc., which manufactures and markets network-ready digital copiers and printers, laser printers, color copiers and printers, digital laser facsimiles and multifunctional, wide-format imaging products, has renewed its lease for 300,000 square feet at 5510 Getwell Road in Memphis.

85. Book Serves as ‘Love Letter’ to Memphis -

Samantha Crespo has written her first book with a simple goal: to make readers fall in love with Memphis.

86. Zoo Parking Controversy Continues to Accelerate -

When the Memphis Zoo pulled its funding of a free trial shuttle Tuesday, May 20, the Overton Park Conservancy moved up the start date two weeks from June 7 to this Saturday, May 24.

And the zoo move had the effect of moving up the end of overflow zoo parking on the Overton Park greensward by two weeks, as well.

87. Zoo Pulls Park Shuttle Funding, Conservancy Moves Up Shuttle Start -

The Memphis Zoo pulled its funding Tuesday, May 20, for a trial zoo shuttle from the Overton Square parking garage. And the Overton Park Conservancy moved up the start of the shuttle service it will now fund on its own to start running two weeks earlier than planned.

91. Overton Park Compromise Takes Shape -

The Overton Park parking plan isn’t a compromise just yet. There are still details to be worked out and a big difference in the price estimate of a Memphis Zoo parking garage.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s plan is to have some kind of agreement in place by the time shuttle service between the park and the Overton Square parking garage begins its month-long trial June 7.

92. Wharton Memo: Overton Greensward Parking Could End In June -

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. is exploring two options for parking at the Memphis Zoo that would end overflow parking on the Overton Park Greensward by the first week in June.

A memo from Wharton dated Saturday, May 17, obtained by The Daily News says the city agrees that the overflow parking on the lawn “is not the highest and best use of the space”

94. Trustmark Regional President Reflects on Future -

When yours is a bank that’s traditionally had a suburban footprint, moving inside the Interstate 240 loop to open a new regional headquarters is the kind of thing that makes a statement.

Trustmark’s newly opened regional headquarters, at 5350 Poplar Ave. in East Memphis, was an attempt to do just that. It came after Gene Henson, the bank’s Memphis region president, had been hunting for such a space for years – for pretty much the entirety of his time in Memphis, actually.
