Advantages include being able to leave on shoes, light outerwear and belts, not having to remove laptops from their cases and leaving liquid or gel bags in carry-ons.

NEW YORK (AP) – U.S. airlines collected more than $1.7 billion in baggage fees during the first half of the year, the largest amount ever collected in that six-month period.

Delta Air Lines Inc. once again claimed the title as the airline collecting the most in baggage fees: nearly $430 million from January through June. The slightly larger United Airlines – part of United Continental Holdings Inc. – followed with $351 million in bag fees, according to a report from the Bureau of Transportation statistics released Tuesday.

Memphis International Airport saw a boost in revenues and cargo handled during the month of August compared to projections for the month.

The four daily AirTran flights and the AirTran operation at Memphis International Airport won’t be converted to the Southwest Airlines brand this year.

Officials of the Dallas-based airline confirmed Monday, June 4, what they have said since they began the integration with AirTran when Southwest acquired the company in April 2011 as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Delta Air Lines reported a 6 percent increase in consolidated passenger unit revenue for the month of May.

The 6 percent increase from the prior year was lower than what Delta, which has a hub at Memphis International Airport, had forecast.

The credit rating agency Fitch Ratings reacted Friday, May 18, to decreasing passenger flights and passenger counts at Memphis International Airport by downgrading airport bonds from an A+ rating to an A and revising its rating outlook from negative to stable.

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority unveiled and approved an incentive plan Thursday, May 17, of up to $1 million to attract competing air service at Memphis International.

The airport’s board of commissioners passed the resolution in hopes that incentives for round-trip daily service to major domestic, regional and international markets will bring more carriers to and lower airfares at the airport, a perennial top five facility in terms of airfares for years.
