Branch, a registered nurse, has oversight of Meritan’s nursing programs, including home health, private duty nursing and medical residential homes. She will be recognized at NACH’s annual meeting in October.

6. US Factory Orders Rise 1.1 Percent in June -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Orders to U.S. factories increased in June, led by demand for aircraft, industrial machinery and computers and electronics.

Orders rose a seasonally adjusted 1.1 percent compared to the previous month, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. Factory orders had fallen 0.6 percent in May after three straight months of gains.

An unusually strong fourth quarter helped push the overall Memphis office market occupancy rate into positive territory for 2013, according to year-end commercial real estate market reports.

The Memphis market recorded absorption of 225,338 square feet in the fourth quarter – the largest positive absorption the market has experienced during any quarter in more than 10 years – to end the year with positive net absorption of 40,558 square feet, according to CB Richard Ellis Memphis.

14. US Homebuilding Dips, But Year Best Since 2007 -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. home construction slowed in December but ended 2013 with the best showing since the housing bubble burst.

The Commerce Department said Friday that builders broke ground last month at a seasonally annual rate of 999,000. That's 9.8 percent lower than November's pace of 1.12 million, which was the fastest in five years.

The Memphis office real estate market began showing signs of life in 2013, with the market for Class A office space in the East Memphis submarket fueling the resurgence.

While the city’s overall office market numbers may not appear very strong, the city’s most desired office submarket – East Memphis around Poplar Avenue and Interstate 240 – began showing strong signs of improvement in the second half of the year.

54. ITT Goulds Signs Lease In Southaven -

A Seneca Falls, N.Y.-based industrial pumping system manufacturer has inked a deal for a distribution center across the parking lot from its current space in Southaven.

ITT Goulds signed a 68,508-square-foot lease in Industrial Development International Inc.’s Stateline Business Park Building C, at 8890 Commerce Drive.

55. Rebranding: Creating Local Personality -

While the services of companies like Coca-Cola, Campbell’s Soup Co. and FedEx vary greatly, all three share a common thread that keeps its following coming back for more – a solid brand.

56. Tower Revival -

The reversal of fortune for the Downtown tower at the intersection of Main Street and Monroe Avenue, until recently plagued by falling occupancy and an uncertain future, was set in motion in a private meeting one year ago this month.

Memphis was one of those.

60. Brokers Join Forces at Commercial Advisors -

Until about six months ago, Bentley Pembroke and Phil Dagastino represented office landlords on an individual basis.

But following the recent signing of Electrolux’s 14,000-square-foot lease at One Commerce Square, 40 S. Main St., the duo decided to join forces as the exclusive office leasing team for Commercial Advisors Asset Services LLC.

61. Local Companies Working to Navigate Economic Straits -

The financial services business seems like a tough one to be in these days.

Investors have for the last few weeks treated bank stocks like the piñata of Wall Street. Bankers, attorneys and investment professionals have boiled a massive government overhaul of the country’s financial regulations down to clipped phrases like “finreg” and “Dodd-Frank” that they speak of often with a grumble or a shaking of the head.

64. Batter Up -

Opening Day is right around the corner for the Memphis Redbirds, who will open the 2011 campaign with improvements to both its ballpark and its financial outlook.

The Redbirds, the minor league Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, on Thursday begin their 14th season in Memphis and 12th at AutoZone Park following the move from Tim McCarver Stadium in 2000.

65. WPG Americas Signs Lease in Southaven -

A San Jose, Calif.-based worldwide electronics distributor is entering the Memphis area with full force.

WPG Americas Inc. has signed a 54,000-square-foot lease at Airways Distribution Center, 481 Industrial Drive, in Southaven. The project – a relocation of the WPG America’s New York facility – represents a $1.5 million investment by the company and will create 60 jobs over the next three years.

66. Inaugural Seminar to Focus on CRE Issues -

Despite commercial real estate’s doldrums, local brokers are seeing signs of resurgence.

Commercial real estate investments – such as malls, office buildings and industrial properties – reached $316 billion nationwide in 2010, according to Thomas Reuters. That represented a 50 percent jump from an eight-year low in 2009 of $209 billion.

67. Consumer Price Index Jumps on Costlier Gas -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer prices rose last month as the cost of gas increased by the largest amount since June 2009. But outside of energy costs, there was little sign of widespread inflation.

NEW YORK (AP) – Holiday shoppers are racing to the end of the season at a more feverish pace this year, with retail revenue up 5.5 percent during the last weekend before Christmas.

The figure, released by ShopperTrak on Wednesday, is a drastic improvement from the same weekend last year, when revenue dropped 6.2 percent. The final shopping weekend last year was marred by a big East Coast snowstorm.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. economy grew at a solid 3.2 percent pace during the first quarter of this year as consumers boosted their spending by the most in three years.

The Commerce Department’s initial estimate of the economy’s performance in the January-to-March quarter, released Friday, provided more evidence that the economy is strengthening. It marked the third straight quarterly gain as the United States heals from the longest and deepest recession since the 1930s.

84. Findings Pinpoint Lamar Corridor’s Troubles -

Anyone who has traveled along Lamar Avenue between Interstate 240 and the Mississippi state line knows how congested it can get, with a seemingly endless line of trucks driving both directions and backing up traffic.
Members of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s aerotropolis initiative now have a better idea of the corridor’s horrendous deficiencies.
Cambridge Systematics Inc., a Cambridge, Mass.-based firm that studies transportation assets and needs nationwide, late last week presented the preliminary findings of its Lamar Avenue Corridor Study to the aerotropolis initiative’s access and transportation committee.
The message is clear and not at all surprising: Lamar Avenue has a host of problems that need to be resolved if Memphis wants to continue its role as a critical link in the global supply chain.
The study, which kicked off in the summer, is addressing traffic flows and transportation needs within the Lamar Avenue corridor – the area bordered by I-240 to the north, the Mississippi state line to the south, Interstate 55 to the west and Hickory Hill to the east.
Cambridge Systematics is conducting the study in conjunction with the Memphis Metropolitan Planning Organization, the University of Memphis’ Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute and the chamber.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation assigned Cambridge Systematics to the study following a request from MPO; TDOT has an ongoing contract with Cambridge Systematics to assist local planning organizations around the state.

87. Nat’l Jobless Rate Reaches 9.8 Percent -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The national unemployment rate rose to 9.8 percent in September, the highest since June 1983, as employers cut far more jobs than expected.

The report is evidence that the worst recession since the 1930s is still inflicting widespread pain and underscores one of the biggest threats to the nascent economic recovery: that consumers, worried about job losses and stagnant wages, will restrain spending. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the nation’s economy.

88. Housing, Jobless Data Point To Fragile Recovery -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Housing construction rose in August and the number of newly laid-off workers seeking unemployment aid fell unexpectedly last week, adding to signs the recession has ended.

Still, the reports suggested a slow and fragile economic recovery. In part, that’s because the increased housing starts were due solely to a surge in construction of apartment buildings – while the much larger single-family homes sector fell for the first time in six months. And jobless claims remain far above the levels associated with a healthy economy.

The August performance added to signs that the housing industry has begun to recover from its worst downturn in decades. Still, economists cautioned that the rebound likely will be slow and tentative, given the glut of unsold homes and record levels of home foreclosures.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. trade deficit in July hit the highest level in six months as a record rise in imports outpaced a third straight increase in foreign demand for American products, according to government data released Thursday. The U.S. trade deficit edged up in April as crude oil prices hit the highest level since December.

But the imbalance so far in 2009 remained well below last year’s pace, and economists expect that to continue as the global recession dampens demand for automobiles, heavy machinery and other goods.

WASHINGTON (AP) - More people sought unemployment benefits than expected last week and laid-off workers found it harder to land new jobs as the economy struggled to show signs of life.

Sour economic indicators Thursday also plagued the retail industry: Weak factory orders were reported for December and sales declines last month for many major stores raised concerns about the industry's health.
