3. UPS to Double Presence at Airport -

The world’s second-busiest cargo airport is about to see another increase in freight capacity, helping bolster a facility that has suffered in recent years from fewer passenger flights.

Atlanta-based United Parcel Service will double in size at Memphis International Airport, according to Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority president and CEO Larry Cox, who announced the news Thursday, Sept. 19, at the monthly board of commissioners meeting.

4. Commission to Consider Residency Ballot Item -

Shelby County Commissioners take a final vote Monday, April 1, on a referendum ordinance that would do away with county government’s residency requirement for employment.

The commission meets at 1:30 p.m. at the Vasco Smith County Administration Building, 160 N. Main St.

6. Administration Warns of 'Destructive' Budget Cuts -

WASHINGTON (AP) – A new White House report issued Friday warns that $110 billion in across-the-board spending cuts at the start of the new year would be "deeply destructive" to the military and core government responsibilities like patrolling U.S. borders and air traffic control.

7. Wharton Presents Budget to Council -

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. takes his budget proposal to the Memphis City Council at the Tuesday, April 17, council session.

Faced with a $37 million gap between expenditures and revenue in the fiscal year that begins July 1, Wharton is expected to do what he has done in past budget presentations – offer the council a menu of options.

9. Uplifting Project -

One-fourth of The Pyramid’s deconstruction is complete, and the project to transform the arena into a Bass Pro Shops superstore by August 2013 is even slightly ahead of schedule.

The city in October filed a $2.5 million building permit to begin new construction work on The Pyramid. By mid-November, the first phase – the demolition – was kicked off by general contractor Montgomery Martin Contractors LLC.

10. Tubing Maker Doubles Space in Willow Lake -

A Memphis-based tubing supplier is renewing its lease and more than doubling its space in a distressed Hickory Hill industrial park.

Jacob Tubing LP – the U.S. subsidiary of European modular tubing manufacturer Jacob Soehne – has renewed its 10-year lease for 20,232 square feet and expanded into an additional 30,000 square feet at Willow Lake Business Park, 3948 Willow Lake Blvd., in the Southeast industrial submarket.

12. DeSoto’s Housing Market Levels Out -

The DeSoto County residential market seems to be leveling off after several years of declining numbers. Sales figures for the year-to-date are slightly up, showing small surges and dropoffs after possibly bottoming out in 2008 and 2009.

13. Connecting to the City -

Memphis will spend up to $1.9 million to stabilize a riverbank so a historic site, living museum and one of the city’s best spots for catching summer breezes can be protected.

Carissa Hussong, the executive director of the National Ornamental Metal Museum, welcomes the investment, but there’s another big item on her wish list. She wants this city-owned property, cutoff from Downtown by Interstate 55, reconnected to the municipal street grid.

19. Vote Delayed on Chamber Funding of Interest Groups -

Members of the Shelby County Board of Commissioners had a lot to say Monday about whether nonprofit civic groups with ties to groups that endorsed or ranked candidates in recent elections should get any money from the Memphis Regional Chamber Foundation and under what terms. But they ultimately delayed a vote on the terms for up to $1 million in funding.
