NEW YORK (AP) – The holiday shopping season is always a make-or-break period for struggling retailers.

But this year, the fight to grab shoppers has intensified, making it difficult for stores to use the season that accounts for about 20 percent of the retail industry's annual sales to bounce back.

5. Where the Values Aren’t -

Downturns, while painful, can be very useful for the information they provide.

The S&P 500, representative of U.S. large cap stocks, declined 4 percent between July 24 and Aug. 7. Limiting our data set to this time period produces a couple of interesting observations. First, while interest rates didn’t actually move as feared, interest rate sensitive investments did. Master limited partnerships, utilities and high dividend payers underperformed over the period. Second, the emerging and frontier markets outperformed notably.

Dollar Tree said Monday it is buying rival discounter Family Dollar for $8.5 billion, significantly broadening its reach as it looks to fend off Wal-Mart, which has been stepping up its courtship of lower-income customers.

NEW YORK (AP) – Target's massive data breach has now cost the company's CEO his job.

Target announced Monday that Chairman, President and CEO Gregg Steinhafel is out nearly five months after the retailer disclosed the breach, which has hurt its reputation among customers and hammered its business.

8. Record Crowds Over Weekend, But Spending Declined -

NEW YORK (AP) – Retailers got Americans into stores during the start to the holiday shopping season. Now, they'll need to figure out how to get them to actually shop.

Target, Macy's and other retailers offered holiday discounts in early November and opened stores on Thanksgiving Day. It was an effort to attract shoppers before Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season.

NEW YORK (AP) – Ducking into a dollar store to pick up some a soda and bag of cookies might save you time and effort, but will you save any money?

Since the start of the downturn, major chains such as Dollar General Corp. and Family Dollar Stores Inc. have accelerated their growth by transforming stores with wider aisles, better lighting and more name brands. The result is that they're shedding their image as depots for misfit merchandise and pulling in a wider range of shoppers.

CHICAGO (AP) - Americans' confidence in the economy improved modestly in January for the third straight month, as they begin to feel slightly better about business conditions and the job picture, according to a survey released Tuesday.

20. Oil Nears $75 per Barrel On Economic Optimism -

Oil prices approached $75 a barrel Monday for the first time in 10 months amid growing optimism that the world’s economies are on the mend.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose 73 cents to $74.62 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil last topped $75 in October.

One chapter in the continuing saga of the New Horizon Park apartments has been closed, but more twists are likely coming for the embroiled property.

The sprawling, 933-unit multifamily complex at 3578 Millbranch Road in Whitehaven was foreclosed and sold for $21.4 million in a Nov. 20 substitute trustee’s sale to Wells Fargo NA. The seller was Spencer Clift, trustee for the Health, Education and Housing Facility Board of the city (HEHFB) of Memphis.
