6. Archer-Malmo Hits Record-High Headcount -

In terms of its headcount, Memphis-based marketing communications agency archer-malmo is at a high-water mark.

The agency’s growth – in everything from its creative talent to its physical footprint and client roster – hasn’t slowed down this year. In the second quarter alone, for example, archer-malmo added seven new hires, bringing its employee roster to a record high of 160.

MEMPHIS (AP) — For 30 years, tourists from around the world have paid money to get a look at two airplanes once owned by Elvis Presley at Graceland in Memphis. Fans enjoy touring the planes for their direct connection to Presley and his jet-setting lifestyle, a sort of touchstone to the life of the King of Rock and Roll and his family.

8. ServiceMaster Begins Trading on NYSE -

The parent company of Memphis-based ServiceMaster Co. LLC began trading on the New York Stock Exchange Thursday, June 26, in an initial public offering of its common stock.

The move to the market comes a day after ServiceMaster Global Holdings Inc. announced it was pricing the offering of 35.9 million shares at $17 per share. The pricing was below analysts’ estimates of $18 to $21 per share.

9. Check, Please: Priceline Buys OpenTable for $2.6 Billion -

NEW YORK (AP) – Priceline has negotiated a $2.6 billion entree into the restaurant business.

The global travel booking king announced Friday it is acquiring the OpenTable Inc. in a deal that would put Priceline into a new business doing for restaurant reservations much what it does for hotel bookings.

10. Graceland Hotel Passes Crucial Hurdle -

A new hotel near Graceland has passed a key regulatory hurdle.

The Memphis-Shelby County Land Use Control Board approved a proposal from Elvis Presley Enterprises to build a 450-room hotel on the same side of Elvis Presley Boulevard as the historic Graceland mansion, one of the city’s top tourism sites.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Reynolds American Inc. is expanding its Tobaccoville, North Carolina, manufacturing complex as it plans national distribution of its Vuse brand electronic cigarette this summer, the company said Friday.

16. Volvo Group’s Byhalia Facility to Employ 250 -

The Volvo Group will build a massive new distribution center in Byhalia, Miss., that should employ around 250 people.

The 1 million-square-foot distribution center will support the company’s Mack, Volvo and UD truck brands, as well as Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Penta. 

17. Graceland Hotel First Sign of Expansion Plans -

It’s been several years since executives at Elvis Presley Enterprises took an expansion plan to homeowners in Whitehaven.

The last time was when the entertainment company CKx Inc. owned 85 percent of Graceland and rolled out a $250 million plan to expand the area around Graceland into a resort setting with more hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues.

18. Graceland Files Notice for 450-Room Whitehaven Hotel -

Elvis Presley Enterprises has filed paperwork with the Land Use Control Board to move ahead with the first part of a long planned expansion of Graceland.

The filing with the LUCB Wednesday, April 30, is for construction of a 450-room hotel on the same side of Elvis Presley Boulevard as the mansion on a parcel of land EPE has owned since the mid 1990s.

Businesses in Memphis increasingly seem to be getting the essence of their brands down to a T.

Said another way, if it involves something enough Memphians care about – the Memphis Grizzlies, civic efforts like the Tennessee Brewery Untapped project or even just slices of Memphis nostalgia, to name a few examples – the T-shirt printing will likely soon commence, if it hasn’t already.

One of the defining features of a traditional newspaper is the content bundle, a broad selection of topics and stories meant to appeal to the widest group of readers possible.

Increasingly, though, upstart digital media outlets are launching in Memphis that take the opposite approach. They’re focusing their brands on content that doesn’t seek to be all things to all people, going after specific niches that the founders of these outlets feel get short shrift from legacy media.

The Greensboro, N.C.-based grocer and retailer is eyeing the vacant office building and hotel at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, according to several sources, who said the property is under contract to be purchased.

The nation's retailers on Thursday reported that sales slowed in February, a time when most stores get rid of winter merchandise and bring in swimsuits, ankle length pants and other spring fashions.

DETROIT (AP) – Americans want new cars and trucks, and they're not going to let higher gas prices or political dysfunction in Washington stand in their way.

General Motors, Toyota, Ford and most other automakers posted at least modest sales gains for February. Industry analysts estimate last month's sales rose about 7 percent from a year earlier as pent-up demand and cheap financing kept the U.S. auto sales recovery powering along.

NEW YORK (AP) – The parent company of Reader's Digest has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than four years, saying it needs to cut its debt so it can keep restructuring.

Grand Ole Opry owner Gaylord Entertainment has agreed to sell its hotel brand and the rights to manage its four hotels to Marriott for $210 million in cash.

The deal announced Thursday follows six months of reviewing options for its business. It will still own the four hotels it’s letting Marriott manage. By handing over day-to-day control of the hotels to Marriott, Gaylord expects to save between $33 million and $40 million a year.

NEW YORK (AP) – Americans were shopping in October, but they were spending at a slower clip than expected as they faced a barrage of bad economic news.

October revenue at stores open at least a year – an indicator of a retailer's health – rose 3.7 percent, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers' tally of 25 retailers. But 13 of 19 retailers missed Wall Street estimates for October revenue, according to Thomson Reuters. That included big merchants like Macy's, Saks and Target.
