The developers behind a massive hotel near Graceland are ready to shake, rattle and roll on the project.

Guest House at Graceland LLC, formed to develop the hotel, has filed an $84 million construction loan for the 450-room resort-style hotel at 3600 Elvis Presley Blvd.

15. TruGreen Selects East Memphis for New Headquarters -

TruGreen is moving more than 300 Memphis-area employees and its corporate headquarters to a 65,000-square-foot space at the Forum II office building in East Memphis, the company announced Friday.

The new headquarters, which will eventually house up to 400 of TruGreen’s corporate associates, will be part of the three-building Forum Office Complex, situated at the intersection of Kirby Parkway and Poplar Avenue.

20. Labor Organizers Seek Unusual Ally in Fast-Food Franchisees -

NEW YORK (AP) – Labor organizers are opening a new front in their campaign for a $15-an-hour wage for fast-food workers with a push to mobilize an unusual ally: franchisees.

The Service Employees International Union on Thursday launched a website in hopes of building a national network of fast-food franchisees who want stronger protections for their businesses. The push has the potential to create more unrest within the ranks for companies like McDonald's, which are already dealing with ongoing demonstrations calling for higher pay and a union for workers.

21. Shelby County Commercial Sales Revenue Surges in First Quarter -

The number of commercial sales in Shelby County dipped in the first quarter when compared to last year but the average sale amount and total sales revenue surged ahead of 2014 levels, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports.

25. Diet Sodas Fall in US; Pepsi Takes Back No. 2 Spot -

NEW YORK (AP) – Americans bought less soda for the tenth straight year in 2014, with diet sodas shrinking more than their sugary counterparts, according to a report released Thursday.

An annual report by the industry tracker Beverage Digest found that overall soda volume slipped 0.9 percent last year, moderating from the decline of 3 percent the previous year.

28. Elvis' Planes Could Take Flight in New Museum -

Two jets once belonging to Elvis Presley that have been displayed at Graceland for years could be destined for a museum, if the group that owns the planes has its way.

OKC Partnership, which owns the Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II jets, has applied to the Office of Planning and Development for a planned development to allow a museum featuring Elvis Presley’s airplanes at 3850 Elvis Presley Blvd. The museum would be located on a vacant lot that was formerly home to Covenant Presbyterian Church.

The first major mixed-use development in Germantown’s western gateway zone is moving forward and will include the first co-branded hotel in the Memphis area.

Developer Ray Gill of Gill Properties is moving forward with plans to build a development that includes office, retail and hotel space on the 10-acre site in Germantown that formerly housed the Nelson-Kirby Farm House.

NEW YORK (AP) – More Super Bowl ad rookies will be trying to score a touchdown this Sunday.

There will be 15 new Super Bowl advertisers this year, the most since 2000, before the economy fell into what would be the first of two recessions since. Advertising experts say the rookie interest in Super Bowl ads is a positive sign that companies are feeling good in the most recent economic recovery.

NEW YORK (AP) – The milk industry is fed up with all the sourness over dairy.

As Americans continue turning away from milk, an industry group is pushing back at its critics with a social media campaign trumpeting the benefits of milk. The parent company of Memphis-based ServiceMaster Co. LLC began trading on the New York Stock Exchange Thursday, June 26, in an initial public offering of its common stock.

The move to the market comes a day after ServiceMaster Global Holdings Inc. announced it was pricing the offering of 35.9 million shares at $17 per share. The pricing was below analysts’ estimates of $18 to $21 per share.

NEW YORK (AP) – Priceline has negotiated a $2.6 billion entree into the restaurant business.

The global travel booking king announced Friday it is acquiring the OpenTable Inc. in a deal that would put Priceline into a new business doing for restaurant reservations much what it does for hotel bookings.

A new hotel near Graceland has passed a key regulatory hurdle.

The Memphis-Shelby County Land Use Control Board approved a proposal from Elvis Presley Enterprises to build a 450-room hotel on the same side of Elvis Presley Boulevard as the historic Graceland mansion, one of the city’s top tourism sites.

69. Graceland Hotel First Sign of Expansion Plans -

It’s been several years since executives at Elvis Presley Enterprises took an expansion plan to homeowners in Whitehaven.

The last time was when the entertainment company CKx Inc. owned 85 percent of Graceland and rolled out a $250 million plan to expand the area around Graceland into a resort setting with more hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues.

70. Graceland Files Notice for 450-Room Whitehaven Hotel -

Elvis Presley Enterprises has filed paperwork with the Land Use Control Board to move ahead with the first part of a long planned expansion of Graceland.

The filing with the LUCB Wednesday, April 30, is for construction of a 450-room hotel on the same side of Elvis Presley Boulevard as the mansion on a parcel of land EPE has owned since the mid 1990s.

Businesses in Memphis increasingly seem to be getting the essence of their brands down to a T.

Said another way, if it involves something enough Memphians care about – the Memphis Grizzlies, civic efforts like the Tennessee Brewery Untapped project or even just slices of Memphis nostalgia, to name a few examples – the T-shirt printing will likely soon commence, if it hasn’t already.

One of the defining features of a traditional newspaper is the content bundle, a broad selection of topics and stories meant to appeal to the widest group of readers possible.

Increasingly, though, upstart digital media outlets are launching in Memphis that take the opposite approach. They’re focusing their brands on content that doesn’t seek to be all things to all people, going after specific niches that the founders of these outlets feel get short shrift from legacy media.

The Greensboro, N.C.-based grocer and retailer is eyeing the vacant office building and hotel at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, according to several sources, who said the property is under contract to be purchased.
