NASHVILLE (AP) – A Knoxville judge on Monday rejected a claim that Pilot Flying J CEO Jimmy Haslam is tampering with potential witnesses in a lawsuit stemming from an FBI raid on the country's largest diesel retailer.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Republican Sen. Bob Corker is spending a lot of time lately talking to Democrats.

The freshman lawmaker from Tennessee unveiled his own 10-year, $4.5 trillion solution for averting the end-of-year, double economic hit of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts and then spoke briefly last week with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Deficit-cutting maven Erskine Bowles had forwarded Corker's proposal to White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew.

NASHVILLE (AP) – Republican Gov.-elect Bill Haslam has named former Chattanooga Times Free Press publisher Tom Griscom to his transition team.

Haslam said in a release Monday that Griscom will become the fourth member of his transition team on a part-time basis, with a focus on developing a communications plan for the new administration.

7. Haslam Appoints Cate as Special Assistant -

Tennessee Gov.-Elect Bill Haslam has named Mark Cate, his former campaign manager, as special assistant to the governor.

Cate, vice president of the Knoxville real estate development firm Lawler-Wood, will be a political adviser to Haslam once Haslam takes office. He will work with Deputy to the Gov. Claude Ramsey and handle special projects for the administration.

8. Bioworks Luncheon Set for Thursday -

The next Memphis Bioworks Business Association Luncheon will feature three panelists who will offer “Insightful Discussion on Bioscience Technology.”

The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Fogelman Executive Center on the University of Memphis campus. The $25 online registration includes parking.

J. Lacey Smith has been named interim dean for the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Smith currently serves as the associate dean of clinical affairs for the College of Medicine and the chief medical officer and executive vice president for UT Medical Group Inc.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Bill Haslam's rivals for Tennessee's Republican gubernatorial nomination are finding ammunition in the Knoxville mayor's position on guns.

Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga, both vocal supporters of gun rights, are targeting Haslam's support for a Knoxville City Council vote earlier this week that keeps in place a ban on handguns in city parks, playgrounds and sports fields.

The Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police presented U.S. Rep. John DeBerry the Legislator of the Year award. DeBerry, who represents District 90 in Memphis, is chairman of the House Children and Family Affairs committee.
