2. Bedrock Eats and Sweets Offers Healthy Choices -

A new healthy eating outlet has launched in Memphis that aims to provide pre-made, healthy whole-food meals and food mixed with a dose of convenience.

Bedrock Eats and Sweets is the product of YoLo’s Taylor Berger and Brandi Marter, partners in the venture, and the goal is to provide people with an alternative to something like a McDonald’s run because they’re hungry and because it’s convenient.

3. Food Truck Alliance Grows With Rodeos -

In 2011, the Memphis City Council passed a food truck ordinance drafted by council members Jim Strickland and Shea Flinn, which allowed self-contained mobile food preparation vehicles to operate in the city of Memphis.

4. Coffee, Beer Bar Coming Downtown -

Downtown residents and visitors will soon be able to grab a cup of joe, locally brewed beer and a fresh sandwich or salad in one convenient spot.

Taylor Berger, partner in YoLo Frozen Yogurt & Gelato, and partners Mitch Buckner (of Bella Café in Pink Palace) and Daniel Flanagan (of Chiwawa, the newly opened Southern-inspired eatery near Overton Square) have signed a lease for 2,755 square feet of retail space in the ground floor of Van Vleet Flats, 122 Gayoso Ave.

The winter months can be tougher on food truck vendors as cold temperatures often keep paying customers inside. But as spring approaches and nicer weather resumes, many local operators are getting set to ramp up operations.

7. Bar Louie, Chiwawa File Business Licenses -

Two long-awaited Madison Avenue restaurants have filed for business licenses with the Shelby County Clerk’s Office.

Memphis Louie LLC applied for its Bar Louie location at 2125 Madison in Overton Square, the Midtown district being redeveloped by Loeb Properties Inc. The Addison, Texas-based franchise will occupy 5,982 square feet of the curved building on the southwest corner of Madison and Cooper Street. The space originally housed Playhouse on the Square in the 1970s.

8. Bike Lane Boost -

A year ago, city roads crews were wrapping up the installation of dedicated bike lanes on the two-mile stretch of Madison Avenue between McNeil and Cooper streets – the culmination of an extensive debate that included those radically for or radically against the two-wheeled route that entailed a major road diet and on-street parking.

9. Berger, McIntosh Acquire Memphis Contract Furniture -

Taylor Berger, principal in YoLo Frozen Yogurt & Gelato, recently bought Memphis Contract Furniture, a designer and manufacturer of custom furniture for the hospitality industry, for $190,000.

10. Green Girl to Create Indoor Vertical Farm -

A group of food professionals is working toward supplying restaurants with local produce while improving the health of Memphians and fighting urban blight.

Green Girl Produce plans to leverage technology to create the city’s first indoor vertical farm, providing the community with cost-effective, year-round organic mircogreens. By leasing an old 1,260-square-foot liquor store at 2655 Broad Ave., the space has the potential to store up to 2,500 square feet of growing room.

11. Grassroots Effort -

Approaching the second anniversary of “New Face for an Old Broad” and the Historic Broad Avenue Business Association’s painting of its own bike lanes, the Binghampton district has seen activity increase exponentially on several fronts.

12. Work Moves Forward on Midtown’s Chiwawa -

Plans are moving forward for Chiwawa, a Southern-inspired Mexican restaurant near Overton Square in Midtown that hopes to open this fall.

A $347,257 permit was recently filed for Chiwawa’s renovations of the two-story, 3,196-square-foot building at 2059 Madison Ave. The space housed Chicago Pizza Factory in the 1980s and has been vacant since.

13. Midtown Eateries File Building Permits -

Two Midtown eateries in the greater Overton Square area have filed building permit applications with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

14. Another Round -

The revitalization of Overton Square can perhaps be best summed up with a famous quote often attributed to Mark Twain: “History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.”

The history of the Midtown entertainment district dates back to late 1970, when T.G.I. Friday’s opened its first franchised location on Madison Avenue near Cooper Street following the passage of a referendum vote allowing liquor by the drink citywide a year prior.

15. Local to Open Second Locale in Overton Square -

After having a popular Downtown presence for more than two years, Local Gastropub has inked its second location in Overton Square.

Local Gastropub will open in the former Yosemite Sam’s at 2126 Madison Ave., at the northwest corner of Madison and North Cooper Street. The 100-year-old, 5,826-square-foot, two-story building housed Yosemite’s Sam’s for 39 years before Loeb Properties Inc. acquired the property from Faye Pannell in August for $350,000.

18. Berger Working on Food Truck Alliance -

As if owning and operating the city’s fastest growing self-serve frozen yogurt business isn’t enough, Taylor Berger is about to add two more hospitality titles to his resume.

19. YoLo to Open 11th Locale at U of M -

YoLo recently finalized a deal to open up a shop on the University of Memphis campus, marking its 11th location in less than two years.

YoLo, which stands for Yogurt Local, will have two self-serve frozen yogurt, or froyo, machines inside the on-campus Bookstore Cafe, allowing four flavor offerings at any given time. About a dozen different types of toppings will be available to choose from as well, so all in all this is the first “mini-YoLo.”

20. Status Update: Now Hiring -

More and more companies are tapping into social networking sites during the recruitment process, giving job board sites a run for their money.

While sites like CareerBuilder and Monster cost money for employers to search through resumes, social media like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are free. And with the number of users growing by the minute, recruiters like Cheryl Citrone and Dianne Tabulog with Vaco Memphis are capitalizing on the high volume of traffic and mutual connections.

21. YoLo in Midst of Targeted Growth Spurt -

In February 2010, Taylor Berger’s wife introduced him to the concept of self-serve frozen yogurt.

Within half a year, he and partner Mike McCaskill had opened two YoLo Frozen Yogurt stores – one in Collierville’s Historic Town Square and one in East Memphis in the Erin Way Shopping Center. By the end of this summer, the pair plan to have nine more up and running.

22. Family Dollar Signs 2 Leases for Stores -

Family Dollar has signed a 12,000-square-foot lease at 2754 Lamar Ave. Shawn Massey, partner with The Shopping Center Group LLC, represented the tenant. Harold Blockman with Keller Williams Realty Inc. represented the landlord, Chong K and Dul S. Pae.

23. Menlo Deal Tops Noteworthy Leases -

The Daily News in September launched a new weekly column called “Inked” to spotlight Memphis’ commercial leasing landscape.

Despite tough times, local commercial real estate firms were able to ink plenty of deals in the past four months. Here’s a rundown of some of the most noteworthy commercial leases since Inked’s debut:

24. Soft Surge -

Self-serve frozen yogurt shops have popped up en masse across the Mid-South in recent months, with the latest batch coming online soon.

The newest addition to the market, Gracie Bleu, opened its doors last week.

25. Menlo Bolsters Local Presence With New Lease -

Menlo Worldwide Logistics LLC is expanding its Memphis-area operations with a new 181,000-square-foot lease in ProLogis Park DeSoto in Olive Branch.

26. Town Square Shift -

Collierville’s historic Town Square has been a gathering spot and source of pride for the town since around Civil War times. In all those decades, the Square – like the town itself – has undergone major shifts, reinventing itself time and again to meet the needs of a changing, growing population.

27. MERI Names Roberts Human Resources Coordinator -

Nancy Roberts has joined the Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI) as human resources coordinator.

Roberts joins MERI after working as vice president of organization development for a large apartment real estate investment trust. In addition, Roberts has more than 15 years of HR experience, including serving in the human resources capacity for a large retail operation and a large marketing firm.
