A federal bankruptcy judge has cleared the way for American Airlines and US Airways to complete their merger and create the world's largest airline.

The judge ruled Wednesday that this month's settlement of an antitrust lawsuit filed by the federal government didn't upset American's bankruptcy-reorganization plan, which is built around the merger. He rejected a request by a group of consumers to block the deal temporarily.

DALLAS (AP) – A federal judge has approved American Airlines' plan to emerge from bankruptcy protection and merge with US Airways, although the airlines must still resolve a lawsuit filed by the federal government seeking to block the merger.

NEW YORK (AP) – A federal judge signaled Thursday that he is leaning toward approving American Airlines' emergence from bankruptcy protection but wanted more time to reflect.

"I'm finding the arguments in favor of confirmation fairly persuasive," Judge Sean H. Lane said from the bench. He could sign off on American's restructuring plan at the next hearing on Sept. 12 or in a written decision prior.

NEW YORK (AP) – American Airlines will ask a federal bankruptcy judge next week to throw out its union contracts if it can't reach cost-cutting deals with labor unions.

One of American's lead lawyers in the bankruptcy case, Harvey Miller, said Thursday that the company and unions have bargained in good faith, but he doesn't expect them to reach compromises.
