Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

2. Spay & Neuter Services to Hold SPAYtacular -

Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services will hold its seventh annual SPAYtacular Gala and Silent Auction Nov. 3.

The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the group and will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Downtown’s Jack Robinson Gallery, 44 Huling Ave.

4. Evans Joins American Esoteric as Vice President -

Dr. Jess Evans has joined American Esoteric Laboratories as vice president of technical operations. In his new role, Evans is responsible for instrumentation, personnel, operational performance and quality assurance for the Memphis laboratory.

Jerry “The King” Lawler, Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, District Attorney General Amy Weirich and Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy are just a few of the local celebrities who’ve channeled their inner Renoirs to raise money in support of local victims of domestic violence.

6. Allie Prescott to Head U of M Alumni Association -

Allie Prescott has been elected president of the University of Memphis Alumni Association national executive board of directors.

Prescott holds his bachelor’s and law degrees from the U of M, and he is a life member of the University of Memphis Alumni Association. As a former adviser to the executive director and former vice president for membership, Prescott is serving his fifth year on the national board.

Methodist North Hospital will hold a stroke support group for stroke survivors and caregivers Thursday, May 26, at 5 p.m. in meeting room one, basement level, 3960 New Covington Pike. This month’s topic is “Dealing with Life After a Stroke.” The group will meet every fourth Thursday of the month. Light refreshments will be served. New York-based designer V.K. Nagrani will be at Oak Hall’s fall Trunk Show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to unveil an exclusive, limited-edition sock he designed as a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis.

The Government Relations Committees of the Collierville Chamber of Commerce and the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce host the eighth annual State Legislative Breakfast today beginning at 8 a.m. at the Ridgeway Country Club, 9800 Poplar Ave. Cost is $15 per person and includes breakfast.
