1. Supreme Court Term Begins Amid Government Shutdown -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court began its new term Monday by turning away hundreds of appeals, including Virginia's bid to revive its anti-sodomy law.

The justices took the bench just past 10 o'clock on the first Monday in October, even as much of the rest of the government was coping with a partial shutdown.

2. Weddle-West Voted GRE Board Chair-Elect -

Dr. Karen Weddle-West, dean of the graduate school, vice provost for academic affairs and director of diversity initiatives at the University of Memphis, has been voted chair-elect of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Board. The national board establishes all policies for the GRE program, the most widely used graduate-school admissions test, and oversees GRE assessments, services and research.

BRIDGES Inc. showed out-of-work people how to create their own jobs with the help of successful small-business owners Wednesday when the nonprofit organization hosted a conference on entrepreneurship.

5. MED Task Force Members Appointed -

Shelby County Interim Mayor Joyce Avery and County Commissioner Joe Ford, who will become county mayor Dec. 10, have appointed a task force to brainstorm short- and long-term solutions to the revenue crisis at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

6. Srinivasan Joins UT Medical Group -

Dr. Saumini Srinivasan has joined the University of Tennessee Medical Group as a pediatric pulmonologist with a special interest in exercise stress testing.

Srinivasan is on the medical staff at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center and also teaches at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and sub-board for Pediatric Pulmonology.
