2. ‘Memphis Rocks’ -

A few months ago, a contestant from Memphis appeared on the TV game show “Wheel of Fortune.”

The host asked if Memphis, by chance, had a slogan for the city, to which the local contestant replied there isn’t one. But Jeremy Park, the indefatigable maestro behind the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club and one of the city’s loudest cheerleaders, is eager to see something fill that void.

3. 50 Years Of SRVS -

Last week we shared a story submitted by Mike Bowen, CEO and president of Champion Awards & Apparel, which spotlighted “late bloomers” and was a testament for how someone’s past does not have to predict his or her future. This week let us discuss an organization that is celebrating 50 years of enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and bringing peace of mind to their families: SRVS.

4. Late Bloomers -

Last week we discussed the Family Safety Center, which is focused on providing one location that effectively combines civil, criminal, health and social services for victims of domestic violence. This week let us share a story that was submitted by reader and LPBC partner, Mike Bowen, CEO and President of Champion Awards & Apparel. The story is about “late bloomers” and is a testament for how businesses can play an active role in the community and how someone’s past does not have to predict his or her future.

5. Defining Memphis: The Wrap-Up -

Last week we spotlighted more heartfelt responses to the question: “What does Memphis mean to you?” It has been amazing, over the last few weeks, to have Memphians share their personal thoughts and how they define our great city. This week let us offer one last set of colorful responses – but I encourage you to keep the conversation alive as we work together to create our Memphis narrative and spread it worldwide.

6. Lessons From a 3-Legged Dog -

DAVIDSON, N.C. – This community of 11,000 residents, site of my alma mater, is also home to my favorite place to spend the night on the road: the Davidson Village Inn, half a block down Depot Street from the campus.

7. Tony Being Tony at Center of Grizz Roller Coaster Season -

Tony Allen is the middle of everything.

If the Grizzlies are making a frantic comeback, like they did recently at home to beat the Denver Nuggets in overtime, Allen is in the highlight reel blocking the shot of Denver forward Al Harrington as he barrels down the lane toward the rim, the potential game-winning basket in hand, Allen flying out of nowhere like some sort of Grit & Grind Superhero.

8. Solver Feedback -

“Ask and ye shall receive.” I’ve heard that for years. May even have read it somewhere. But I certainly have proved it to be true. Repeatedly, over time.

For instance, five years ago I started writing a monthly crossword for the Rotarian, the magazine of Rotary International. Rotary is the service club started by Paul Harris in 1905. I bet you’ve heard of it.

9. Tiger Gift Shop Moves To Larger Space -

Tiger Gift Shop is relocating a few doors down from its current location on the Highland Strip near the University of Memphis.

10. Film Fest Brings Fab Moments -

The column about my knee evoked a record amount of viewer mail. Evidently, many folk have joint pain issues.

My PRP injection was one month ago, and my knee feels better than it has in years. On a couple days there’s been some semblance of the old pain, as after three days of golf and yard work Memorial Day weekend.

11. Puzzling Tourney 2011 -

Brooklyn, N.Y. – My annual trek to the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament began before daylight March 17. It was St. Patrick’s Day, and I forgot to wear green. Fortunately, I had my green pen in my pocket.

12. Taking Care of Business -

A diverse mix of Memphis businesses is defying the odds and finding success spanning multiple family generations. Grant & Co., Champion Awards, Jim’s Place East, Barden Stone and Broadway Pizza are among the Memphis institutions thriving under second- and third-generation ownership and management.
