1. Judicial Campaign Season Emerges With Different Rules -

Fundraisers and other campaign events for judicial candidates are difficult.

Sometimes there are more candidates for other offices at them than citizens with no direct political interest who are undecided on who to vote for. And more so than in any other field of candidates, judges are limited by ethics in what they can say when trying to persuade someone to vote for them.

2. Dueling Election Databases Make Tracking Difficult -

If ever the political axiom of needing a scorecard to keep up with the players applied to an election cycle, it would be the set of three elections in 2014 across Shelby County.

The middle election of the three – the August ballot of county general elections and state and federal primary elections – is expected to be one of the longest in the county’s political history, if not the longest.

3. Scharff Elected to Legal Roles at Buckman, Bulab Holdings -

Jonathan Scharff has been elected vice president, legal and general counsel for Buckman and corporate secretary for Bulab Holdings Inc., Buckman’s parent company. Scharff has more than 22 years’ experience in the legal industry, including positions at Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale PC in St. Louis and Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh PLLC in Memphis. In his new position, he will oversee legal needs in U.S. and global operating companies and work with associates in preventing and managing legal risks.

4. Levy Named Assistant Dean in U of M School of Public Health -

Dr. Marian Levy has been named assistant dean of students and public health practice for the University of Memphis School of Public Health. Levy is also an associate professor in the school and is the current president of the Tennessee Public Health Association.

5. Bar Examines Dress Code Issue -

For an hour last week, a group of 16 attorneys and judges gathered in the Tennessee Supreme Court chambers in the Shelby County Courthouse to talk about whether a specific dress code is needed in the nine divisions of Circuit Court.

6. Gerard Appointed Administrator at Methodist Cancer Center -

Dr. Dava F. Gerard has been appointed administrator for the Methodist Healthcare Cancer Center. She previously was the founding vice president and chief operating officer of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas.

7. Wassmer Captures Account Exec Spot at Thompson & Berry -

Katie Wassmer has been promoted to account executive at Thompson & Berry Public Relations, a division of Thompson & Co. Wassmer has been with Thompson & Berry for two years. She joined the company as an intern. Wassmer graduated from the University of Memphis in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in journalism/public relations.

8. Fair Installed as President of State Realtor Group -

Rosemarie Fair was installed as president of the Tennessee Association of Realtors for 2006. Fair, CEO of Memphis-based One Source Commercial Inc., was named TAR Realtor of the Year in 2004. The Memphis Area Association of Realtors named her Realtor of the Year in 1991.
