1. Cohen Prevails, Incumbents Dominate -

Democratic U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen held off Thursday, Aug. 7, the most serious electoral challenge he’s faced since winning the Congressional seat in 2006, in the form of attorney Ricky E. Wilkins.

2. Memphis Bar Judicial Poll Released -

The Memphis Bar Association poll of attorneys on the judicial races on the Aug. 7 ballot shows 16 percent to as high as 38 percent of the attorneys participating have no opinion in many of the judicial races.

3. Harris Files Ford Challenge at Deadline -

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

4. Pitts Receives Compliance Expert Certification -

Dallas Pitts, compliance officer at FAA Federal Credit Union, has received Cuna's Credit Union Compliance Expert certification.

The certification covers all federal regulations for credit unions, as well as giving an overview of state regulations.
Pitts has worked for FAA FCU for more than 11 years, holding positions as a teller, member services representative and compliance officer.

5. Seven Assistant DAsAdded to Local Office -      Shelby County District Attorney General Bill Gibbons has added seven new assistant district attorneys to his office's team of prosecutors.

6. Thompson Named Chair of MPACT Board -

Jeni Stephens Thompson has been named the new chairwoman of the MPACT Memphis board of directors. Thompson is the director of marketing and development for the Memphis Bioworks Foundation. She has a bachelor's degree in communications from Lambuth University and a master's degree in education from Vanderbilt University. Thompson serves as the programs chair for the Association of Fundraising Professionals and sits on the Playhouse on the Square board. She is a member of the Leadership Memphis Class of 2008.

7. Trezevant Manor Foundation Names Development Director -

Martha Boyd was named director of development for the Trezevant Manor Foundation.

The New York Times Co. Broadcast Media Group announced that Bruce Moore was named news director of WREG-TV in Memphis, effective Jan. 30. Moore is a 15-year veteran of WVEC-TV in Norfolk, Va. He served as assistant director of WVEC-TV for seven years. He graduated from the University of Georgia.
