Alisa Ellis has joined State Systems Inc. as a low voltage sales executive. She brings 16 years of telecommunications experience to the company, which offers protection products and services, including fire protection equipment, training and cleaning services, as well as technology services such as network integration, cabling systems and wireless support.

5. Fisher Joins Boy Scouts Chickasaw Council as CEO -

Richard L. Fisher has joined the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America as chief executive officer. In his new role, Fisher will extend character development and leadership skills to youth who live in the Chickasaw Council territory, which includes the Mississippi Delta, Memphis, and Shelby and Crittenden counties.

The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is celebrating its golden anniversary this year. On Oct. 27, the school held its 50th anniversary celebration for the Downtown facility, which opened in 2010 and marked a new chapter for a building that once was the Front Street post office for nearly 40 years and a federal courthouse before that.

11. Arkansas Supreme Court Strikes Down Execution Law -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – The Arkansas Supreme Court struck down the state's execution law Friday, calling it unconstitutional.

In a split decision, the high court sided with 10 death row inmates who argued that, under Arkansas' constitution, only the Legislature can set execution policy. Legislators in 2009 voted to give that authority to the Department of Correction.

J. Anthony Bradley has been named for the third consecutive year to the Mid-South Super Lawyers for estate planning and probate practice areas.

15. Smith & Nephew's DeVivo Named Chamber Chairman -

The Greater Memphis Chamber has a new chairman, it announced Thursday.

Joseph “Joe” DeVivo was named chairman of the board by a unanimous vote by his fellow directors. DeVivo, who is president of orthopedic reconstruction for Smith & Nephew Inc., assumes the leadership position immediately.

16. Kent H. Landsberg Co. Doubles Space -

Kent H. Landsberg Co. has finally inked a deal that had been in the works for quite some time.

Landsberg, a packaging, janitorial and food service shipping supply company, stayed in Memphis and expanded when it purchased Wurzburg Inc., a Memphis-based provider of supply-chain logistics and packaging.

17. Mercer Capital Promotes Heinz to Senior VP -

Nicholas J. Heinz has been promoted to senior vice president at Mercer Capital. Heinz joined Mercer Capital in 2000 and is a senior member of the Mercer’s investment banking corporate valuation division.

18. Southern Heritage Classic Founder Receives Lifetime Achievement Award -

Fred Jones has received the Arthur S. Holmon Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Memphis Black Student Association.

19. Council to Tease out Snarls Surrounding Lee Case -

The city of Memphis, under Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery, has hired a private attorney to recoup settlement money the city paid this summer to the former head of the city-owned utility company.

20. Dress Newest Pathologist At Pathology Group of the MidSouth -

Dr. Matthew A. Dress has joined Pathology Group of the MidSouth PC as its newest pathologist.

Before joining Pathology Group of the MidSouth, Dress served as the chief resident in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Tennessee. He then completed a fellowship in hematopathology at the University of Rochester Medical Center-Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. 

21. U of M’s Preza Receives $740K Award for Research -

Dr. Chrysanthe Preza has received a more than $740,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award for her research to improve live cell imaging. Preza is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering.

22. Thornton Receives Glankler Pro Bono Award -

Laurie M. Thornton of Glankler Brown PLLC has received the second annual Frank J. Glankler Jr. Pro Bono Award given by James S. Gilliland and the Glankler Brown law firm.

23. Judge to Consider if Ford, Lee Should Be Tried Together -

A federal judge will decide next week whether Memphis City Councilman Edmund Ford and former Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division head Joseph Lee will go to trial together to face an 11-count indictment against both men.

24. Catholic Diocese Settles Lawsuits -

The Catholic Diocese of Memphis has settled three lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by two priests. Confirmation of the settlements and dismissals last month come a week after two new lawsuits were filed alleging a fourth instance of child sexual abuse by a priest named in three other lawsuits and the rape of an adult by another priest.

25. Net Magan, Others Sued for Breach of Contract -

The parties involved in a $78 million real estate portfolio sale from 2005 now are going to court over what one group calls a breach of contract.

Distriplex Investors LLC has filed a $3.5 million breach of contract complaint in Shelby County Chancery Court against Net Magan Land GP One LLC, Net Magan Land Mezz LLC and Joseph Mizrachi, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

26. Application Period for State Court of Appeals Vacancy Ends -
NASHVILLE (AP) - The state Judicial Selection Commission will meet later this month to discuss filling the state Court of Appeals vacancy created when Judge William Koch was named to the Supreme Court.

In nearly 45 years of political involvement, Fred Thompson has seen the fortunes of his chosen political party rise and fall several times over.

Those times have changed the nature of the Tennessee Republican party but not a brand of conservatism to which Thompson is expected to give national form as a contender for the White House.

28. Diocese Settles Sex Suits for More Than $300K -

The Catholic Diocese of Memphis has settled three lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by a priest assigned to minister to the city's Vietnamese Catholic community.

The settlements, announced last week, are the first in any of the nine civil lawsuits filed beginning in August 2004 against the Memphis Diocese and five priests. All nine allege child sexual abuse and a cover-up by the Diocese.

29. Memphis Heart Clinic Promotes Shirwany to Cardiovascular Practice -

Memphis Heart Clinic recently appointed Dr. Arsalan Shirwany to its cardiovascular practice. Shirwany is board certified in cardiology, echocardiology and internal medicine. He has served as chief fellow during his cardiology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Previously, Shirwany was a staff physician with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Memphis and an assistant professor of medicine at UTHSC.

30. Methodist Director Elected President Of Tennessee Board of Pharmacy -

Sheila Mitchell, director of pharmacy services at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital, has been elected president of the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy. Mitchell has worked for Methodist for more than 20 years. She is an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's College of Pharmacy and has served on several committees for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. The Tennessee House of Representatives honored her in 2002 for her local contributions to her field.

31. Siegal-Robert Inc. Selects CEO -

David M. Gilchrist has been selected as chief executive officer of Siegal-Robert Inc. and Siegal-Robert Automotive. Most recently, Gilchrist was the president and CEO of Jackson Products Inc. in St. Louis, a highway and personal safety product manufacturer. He also has held supervisory positions with Mid-South Industries and VP Buildings Inc.

Gale Jones Carson has been named director of corporate communications for Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division. In her new executive-level position, she will report directly to MLGW president and CEO Joseph Lee III. She previously was executive assistant to Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.

Judy Conrad has been named vice president of lending at Memphis Area Teachers' Credit Union (MATCU). Conrad previously served as vice president and manager of BankTennessee in Ripley. She has worked in the financial industry for almost 40 years.

35. Memphis Area Legal Services Board Elects Matthews as VP -

The Memphis Area Legal Services' board of directors has elected Antonio "Toney" Matthews to serve as its vice president. Matthews is an attorney with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC and is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association and the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility Hearing Committee.
