WASHINGTON (AP) – The Obama administration opened an aggressive new front in the battle over voter protection Thursday, singling out Texas for legal action and promising broader efforts to come after last month's Supreme Court ruling that wiped out a major provision of the Voting Rights Act.

2. Supreme Court Halts Use of Key Part of Voting Law -

WASHINGTON (AP) – A deeply divided Supreme Court threw out the most powerful part of the landmark Voting Rights Act on Tuesday, a decision deplored by the White House but cheered by mostly Southern states now free from nearly 50 years of intense federal oversight of their elections.

3. Spring Home-Selling Season Could Disappoint -

NEW YORK (AP) - Home prices plunged by record levels in January from a year ago, with almost no major cities immune from the spiraling market. Analysts worried that even the usually reliable spring selling season would fall flat.

5. Local Businessman to Head State Insurance Group -

Brad V. Smith, president of Cecil Smith Insurance Agency in Germantown, was elected president of Insurors of Tennessee. Smith has served on the association's board of directors and executive committee for 12 years. He won the group's Chairman of the Year award in 2004 and Insuror of the Year award in 1992.
