1. Wharton Names Eight to Pre-K Trust Fund Board -

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. nominated eight people Monday, Sept. 23, to serve on the board of a pre-kindergarten trust fund that would be established if city voters approve a half-cent sales tax hike in November.

3. Wharton Appoints Education Task Force -

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. has named a 21-member task force to recommend the role of city government once the county’s two public school systems are consolidated.

Wharton anticipates that with schools consolidation, the city of Memphis will no longer be required to fund local schools at a certain level. But Wharton has said that doesn’t mean the city wouldn’t have any role in local education.

4. Phillips to Become President of Optometry School -

Dr. Richard W. Phillips has been named president-elect of Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. Phillips is a 1978 graduate of the college and the former regional executive director for Tennessee operations for TLC - Laser Eye Centers. He will be only the sixth person to hold the office in the college's 75-year history. Phillips will assume the presidency May 17. He is replacing William E. Cochran, who is retiring.

5. Small High School Clicks Along With Eye on Being Different - and Better -

For the first couple of weeks of the 2006-2007 school year, high school principal Kana Mabon was a math teacher. Until Memphis City Schools found someone to teach that subject, the principal of the New Small High School did her best to convey her knowledge of ninth-grade mathematics.
