9. Obama Carries Shelby, Cohen Over Flinn and Two Tax Hikes Defeated -

President Barack Obama carried Shelby County in unofficial Nov. 6 election returns as his Republican challenger Mitt Romney took the state’s 11 electoral votes.

Voter turnout in the most popular election cycle among Shelby County voters was 61.9 percent, about the same percentage as four years ago. But the 371,256 voters is fewer than 2008 when more than 400,000 Shelby County voters cast ballots. The percentage is about the same because there are fewer registered voters in Shelby County than there were four years ago after a purge by election officials.

A restaurant people still mourn for is Buns on the Run, which had an 11½ year run in an old frame house on Elzey, just east of South Cooper, before closing in November 2008. In that cozy establishment, Pam Hardin and Sharron Johnson served the most comforting of comfort food, along with sublime baked goods and a sunny, welcoming attitude. Buns on the Run put the “home” in home cooking.

“Demand is back” was the theme at the ninth annual Southern Lodging Summit held Downtown this week at The Peabody hotel and the Memphis Cook Convention Center.

24. Soul Fish Café Owners Buck Economic Trends -

When Soul Fish Café opened in the Cooper-Young neighborhood in 2006, few people, including its owners, could have predicted its success.

Now Raymond Williams and Tiger Bryant have opened a second Soul Fish Café in Germantown, an optimistic move that might seem to run counter to the prevailing economy, but Williams said, “Despite the recession, our sales were up 20 percent in 2009,” a year that was rife with the closing of local restaurants.

25. Rulings on Public Housing Rent Fraud Appealed -

GALLATIN, Tenn. (AP) - A district attorney is asking the Tennessee Supreme Court to let him bring criminal charges against public housing tenants who hide income to get cheaper rent.

The Tennessean reports that Sumner County District Attorney Ray Whitley is appealing a judge's decision to dismiss the case. A state appeals court agreed with the judge that lying about income isn't theft of a service.

26. Garrison Appointed to Leadership Post for American Bar Section -

Grady M. Garrison has been appointed to serve as vice chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Subcommittee for the American Bar Association Litigation Section.

Garrison, of counsel at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC, concentrates his practice in the areas of intellectual property and franchise law.

27. AIGA Design Conference To Be Held in Memphis -

The 2009 AIGA Design Conference, “Make/Think,” will be held Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center and the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

The conference will include workshops, roundtable discussions, speakers, a design fair, networking receptions and tours of Sun Studio, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the FedEx Corp. hub, Graceland and local advertising firms archer>malmo, Red Deluxe and ODEN.

28. Gray Knights Offer Shining Armor to MALS -

One local lawyer has led the way for a group of senior attorneys to offer Memphis Area Legal Services more pro bono work.

Allen Malone, a member of Burch Porter & Johnson PLLC, in April e-mailed about 200 Memphis Bar Association members 65 and older, telling them they had been nominated to the new group.

29. Candidates Announced For Judicial Nominating Commission -

The recently renamed Judicial Nominating Commission, formerly the Judicial Selection Commission, on Friday released the names of the applicants for the 17-member commission.

Approximately 237 attorneys, judges and citizens from throughout Tennessee applied for the commission, which is charged with creating lists of potential judicial appointees for the Tennessee Supreme Court, the Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Tennessee Criminal Court of Appeals.

30. Paul Stanley's Fall From Grace -

Jim Kyle, a Memphis Democrat who serves as minority leader in the state Senate, gave the first lunchtime address of 2009 to the Memphis Rotary Club.

Rotarians got a bird’s-eye view of the state’s financial picture from Kyle, who described choices needed to close the state’s budget shortfall. Kyle this week announced his candidacy in the 2010 gubernatorial race.

31. MERI Names Roberts Human Resources Coordinator -

Nancy Roberts has joined the Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI) as human resources coordinator.

Roberts joins MERI after working as vice president of organization development for a large apartment real estate investment trust. In addition, Roberts has more than 15 years of HR experience, including serving in the human resources capacity for a large retail operation and a large marketing firm.

Whitney King Fogerty has joined Jackson Lewis LLP as of counsel.

People who watch shows such as “Law & Order” might imagine lawyers constantly head-butting, arguing and back-stabbing.

However, in the real world, lawyers tend to be more collegial. But many lawyers have said they would like to see more civil, courteous behavior among their colleagues.

One month after her return to Pakistan following eight years in self-imposed exile, former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto met with a U.S. Congressional delegation that included Tennessee's freshman Republican Sen. Bob Corker.

48. Judicial Evaluations Get Jaws Flapping and Tails Swishing in Legal Circles -

A week after their release, the latest batch of judicial evaluations from Memphis Bar Association members remains a touchy subject in the legal community.

The evaluations have been controversial since the first surveys were mailed to attorneys in 1987. The survey moved from once a year to once every two years in 2001 after lots of discussion about whether the timing of them was intended to influence judicial elections.

Memphis has a significant connection to arguments made this week in a federal appeals court about whether the government's controversial domestic spying program is unconstitutional.

Of the three judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit who heard arguments Wednesday from supporters of the program in the Justice Department as well as the American Civil Liberties Union's (ACLU) opposition, two are from Memphis.

Amy Amundsen has been named the 2007 vice president of the Memphis Bar Association (MBA). Prior to that, she served as treasurer.

Amundsen is a partner at the law firm of Rice Amundsen & Caperton PLLC, and focuses her practice primarily on domestic law. Amundsen recently worked with the SCALES (Supreme Court Advancing Legal Education for Students) Project, which was held in Memphis last month. It allowed several hundred Shelby County high school students to see cases argued before the Tennessee Supreme Court.

When Barbara Zoccola was named 2006 Memphis Bar Association's president, she chose "Law Inspires ..." as the year's overriding thesis. It has since paid dividends.

"I chose the theme because law does inspire," Zoccola said last year when she first became president of the MBA. Almost one year later, that theme - and the seminars which it spawned - has come full circle in confirming that seed of thought.

67. Reynolds Named Head Baseball Coach at STCC -

Alan "Bo" Reynolds has been named the new head baseball coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College. He previously worked at Olive Branch High School, where he was head baseball coach in 2005-2006 after serving as assistant coach from 2003 to 2005. He also coached at Rhodes College from 1990 to 2003, where he was both an assistant coach and head coach and the University of Memphis from 1987 to 1990. There, he was an assistant under head coach Bobby Kilpatrick.

The number "one" is fitting for the name of the giant mixed-use development Gene Carlisle is creating Downtown, as both a locator and a clue to the project's scope.

That's "one" as in One Beale, the address at the foot of Beale Street where the wealthy Wendy's franchisee is developing a 30-story hotel/condominium development with a price tag of between $150 million and $175 million. The "one" also is a clue to the scale of the skyline-changing project, which is unprecedented for Memphis.

Each year at the Memphis Bar Association annual meeting, the presidential gavel is passed. This year, Barbara Zoccola will receive the gavel and assume the presidency at the Dec. 1 event.

Zoccola automatically succeeds to president after serving a term as MBA vice president. David M. Cook will become vice president. The positions of treasurer and secretary, as well as members of the board of directors, are currently being decided in the MBA's annual elections and will be announced at the Dec. 1 meeting.

74. ABWA Chapter Names Woman of the Year -

Cheryl D. Fleming of Crye-Leike, Realtors, was named 2005 Woman of the Year by the local chapter of the American Business Women's Association. Fleming currently serves as president of the association.

75. Study Reflects Healthy Level of Pro Bono Service -

More attorneys than not are doing pro bono work. A report released by the American Bar Association last week found that 66 percent of respondents to a national survey were involved in some level of pro bono service.

76. UTHSC Names Neonatology Division Chief -

Dr. Ramasubbareddy Dhanireddy was named neonatology division chief and Sheldon B. Korones Professor in Neonatology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dhanireddy also will serve as medical director of the Sheldon B. Korones Newborn Center at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.
