1. This week in Memphis history: February 21-27 -

2013: The Salvation Army Kroc Center opened at the Mid-South Fairgrounds.

1974: On the front page of The Daily News, Albertine McCrory developers announced a 1,500-home planned community at Interstate 40 and Whitten Road called Hillshire. The plans called for single-family homes, townhouse condominiums, garden apartments, duplexes and commercial areas as well as an office industrial park for an estimated 12,000 people or a community about the size of Parkway Village at the time.

2. This week in Memphis history: September 20-26 -

1993: Elvis Presley Enterprises joined the ownership group for the proposed Memphis NFL franchise that city leaders were seeking. William B. Dunavant Jr., the leader of the effort, announced Graceland’s role in the ownership group during a reception at Graceland. Others in the ownership group included Fred Smith, Mike Starnes, J.R. “Pitt” Hyde and Paul Tudor Jones.

3. Elvis/Stax Confluence Blunted By Marketing -

Roger Semon of Sony Music Entertainment knows the music business and Elvis Presley’s sound like few others do.

And he knows where RCA, Presley’s record label, went wrong in marketing what should have been a historic intersection of Presley with Stax Records.

5. Royalty Money Better Late Than Never, Music Heritage Group Insists -

The Stax record label could be headed for a potential rebirth, thanks to Justin Timberlake's announcement Sept. 15 that he wants to build a contemporary version of the iconic label, which started in 1959 as a small record store in South Memphis and later helped launch the careers of music legends like Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding.
