1. Coffee, Beer Bar Coming Downtown -

Downtown residents and visitors will soon be able to grab a cup of joe, locally brewed beer and a fresh sandwich or salad in one convenient spot.

Taylor Berger, partner in YoLo Frozen Yogurt & Gelato, and partners Mitch Buckner (of Bella Café in Pink Palace) and Daniel Flanagan (of Chiwawa, the newly opened Southern-inspired eatery near Overton Square) have signed a lease for 2,755 square feet of retail space in the ground floor of Van Vleet Flats, 122 Gayoso Ave.

Taylor Berger, partner in YoLo Frozen Yogurt & Gelato, along with partners Mitch Buckner (of Bella Café in Pink Palace) and Daniel Flanagan (of Chiwawa, the newly opened Southern-inspired eatery near Overton Square), have signed a lease for 2,755 square feet of retail space in the ground floor of Van Vleet Flats, 122 Gayoso Ave.

3. Bar Louie, Chiwawa File Business Licenses -

Two long-awaited Madison Avenue restaurants have filed for business licenses with the Shelby County Clerk’s Office.

Memphis Louie LLC applied for its Bar Louie location at 2125 Madison in Overton Square, the Midtown district being redeveloped by Loeb Properties Inc. The Addison, Texas-based franchise will occupy 5,982 square feet of the curved building on the southwest corner of Madison and Cooper Street. The space originally housed Playhouse on the Square in the 1970s.

4. Work Moves Forward on Midtown’s Chiwawa -

Plans are moving forward for Chiwawa, a Southern-inspired Mexican restaurant near Overton Square in Midtown that hopes to open this fall.

A $347,257 permit was recently filed for Chiwawa’s renovations of the two-story, 3,196-square-foot building at 2059 Madison Ave. The space housed Chicago Pizza Factory in the 1980s and has been vacant since.

5. Midtown Eateries File Building Permits -

Two Midtown eateries in the greater Overton Square area have filed building permit applications with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

6. Local to Open Second Locale in Overton Square -

After having a popular Downtown presence for more than two years, Local Gastropub has inked its second location in Overton Square.

Local Gastropub will open in the former Yosemite Sam’s at 2126 Madison Ave., at the northwest corner of Madison and North Cooper Street. The 100-year-old, 5,826-square-foot, two-story building housed Yosemite’s Sam’s for 39 years before Loeb Properties Inc. acquired the property from Faye Pannell in August for $350,000.

9. Berger Working on Food Truck Alliance -

As if owning and operating the city’s fastest growing self-serve frozen yogurt business isn’t enough, Taylor Berger is about to add two more hospitality titles to his resume.

10. YoLo in Midst of Targeted Growth Spurt -

In February 2010, Taylor Berger’s wife introduced him to the concept of self-serve frozen yogurt.

Within half a year, he and partner Mike McCaskill had opened two YoLo Frozen Yogurt stores – one in Collierville’s Historic Town Square and one in East Memphis in the Erin Way Shopping Center. By the end of this summer, the pair plan to have nine more up and running.
