Clarence Mumford Sr., a one-time assistant principal in Memphis City Schools, was sentenced Monday, May 13, to seven years in prison for organizing and running a cheating ring on teacher tests.
Mumford was sentenced by Memphis federal Judge John Fowlkes following his guilty plea to 21 counts in the cheating scandal including conspiracy.
3. NexAir Expands with New Branch

Memphis-based nexAir has opened a branch in Dothan, Ala.
The atmospheric gases and welding center opened the branch June 13 with plans for it to serve Dothan and surrounding areas, including southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The branch will offer a full line of welding equipment, supplies and gases to businesses in the region.
“We look forward to the opportunity to provide that same quality of service to the Dothan community and surrounding areas,” said Bill Proctor, president of nexAir.
The location opened with three employees: Tracy Battles, territory manager; Jackie Battles, branch operations manager; and Brian Shehee, route salesman.
With 70 years of experience, nexAir is one of the largest distributers of atmospheric gases and welding supplies in the United States. The company sells, packages and distributes atmospheric gases, including medical, specialty and industrial gases. NexAir operates in nine states with 21 locations and more than 250 employees.
