3. Smith & Nephew Cuts Part of Tough Year for Industry -

Smith & Nephew is the latest medical device maker to cut Memphis jobs in what’s proven to be a formidable year for the industry.

The London-based company Tuesday, Dec. 16, reduced its workforce by about 80 at its Memphis-based orthopedics unit, where it employs roughly 2,000 people.

4. Smith & Nephew Lays Off 80 in Memphis -

Smith & Nephew Inc. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, said the company had cut about 80 jobs at its Memphis-based orthopedics unit, where the London-based medical device manufacturer employs more than 2,000 workers.

5. Smith & Nephew Reports 12 Percent Revenue Growth -

Smith & Nephew Inc. on Friday reported its second quarter revenues totaled $1.08 billion, a 12 percent growth compared with $959 million in the same quarter last year.

The London-based medical device manufacturer’s orthopaedics division is based in Memphis, where it employs more than 2,000 people.

6. DeVivo Departure Signals Shift at Smith & Nephew -

Smith & Nephew Inc. said its Memphis-based president of Orthopaedic Reconstruction and Trauma will soon leave the company as part of an organizational restructuring that will combine the company’s Memphis and Andover, Mass., divisions.

7. DeVivo Out, Smith & Nephew to Restructure -

Joseph “Joe” DeVivo is out as president of Orthopaedic Reconstruction and Trauma for Smith & Nephew Inc., the company told The Daily News Monday.

DeVivo joined Smith & Nephew in June 2006. He previously served as president & CEO of RITA Medical System Inc. of Fremont, Calif., a manufacturer of ablation devices.

8. Smith & Nephew ‘Gentlemen’s Club’ Lawsuit Moved -

A lawsuit filed by three former Smith & Nephew Inc. sales agents has been moved to Memphis federal court. The agents filed suit in Texas last year alleging they were wrongfully fired after visiting a strip club with a physician client.

9. Joint Venture -

Charles Redden remembers getting the call in April.

A sales associate for Smith & Nephew, Redden worked hospitals and clinics in Dallas – among the most lucrative regions for the British medical device maker whose U.S. headquarters is in Memphis. On the other end of the phone line was Redden’s boss, Jon Hebel, a former minor league baseball player and an area sales manager for Smith & Nephew.

11. Orthopedic Cos. Unveil Rival Products -

It’s no coincidence that Wright Medical Group of Arlington and the Memphis division of Smith & Nephew announced new products for total knee replacements on the same day this week.

The companies planned the announcements for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Las Vegas, which began Wednesday, and are unveiling the products in exhibitions at the Venetian/Sands EXPO.
