NEW YORK (AP) – CVS Caremark said Thursday its profit slipped 1 percent in the second quarter as its pharmacy benefits management business weathered lower prices on contract renewals.

The Woonsocket, R.I., company said Caremark faced lower prices related to contract renewals. The most significant of those was its retail pharmacy contract with the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program, which the company renewed in the third quarter of 2010. While those renewals cut into its profit, total revenue for CVS Caremark rose 10.9 percent to $14.57 billion as the company began a new 12-year contract with Aetna Inc. and acquired Universal American Corp.'s Medicare Part D business.

CVS 4990 TN LLC has bought four parcels in the Park Avenue and South Highland Street area in two transactions totaling $1.7 million. In the first transaction, Terrie Lynn Johnson Bonds and Larry Gene Johnson, heirs at law of Lou Alice Brattan Johnson, deceased, sold 3500 Park Ave., 3516 Park Ave. and 850 S. The job cuts affect staffers across the country, but more than half are at the company's customer support center at its headquarters in Woonsocket, R.I., according to an e-mailed statement from a company spokesman. The jobs eliminated do not include store staff.

CVS has closed on the 1.8-acre parcel of land on Germantown Parkway in Cordova where it will build its next area pharmacy. Terms of the deal weren’t immediately available.

The Daily News first reported in June that Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS, the retail division of CVS Caremark, would buy the land from Gill Properties and bring a retail store to the site of the former Memphis Area Home Builders Association headquarters at 776 N. Germantown Parkway.
