When the new Memphis Animal Shelter opened in November, an undercover police officer was among its employees, working as a technician.

But by this month – when three shelter employees were indicted on felony animal abuse charges and the undercover operation was revealed – James Rogers was already settled in as the interim director of the $7 million facility.

4. Problems Follow Memphis Animal Shelter to Cordova -

The new Memphis Animal Shelter in Cordova, which will have its formal opening next month, will come with many of the same concerns that plagued the old shelter near Memphis International Airport.

The problems go beyond the building used to house abandoned or stray dogs, cats and horses as well as other animals rounded up across the city.

5. Memphis Asks National Group to Evaluate Shelter -

MEMPHIS (AP) – Memphis officials hope the Humane Society of the United States will help evaluate the city's animal shelter.

Chief city administrative officer George Little said there's no agreement yet, but city officials hope the society will either conduct an independent review of the shelter or join in the current investigation being conducted by the Memphis Rotary Club.

6. Friends of MAS Hosts Valentine's Event -

Friends of Memphis Animal Services will host a Valentine Adoption Spectacular from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Memphis Animal Shelter, 3456 Tchulahoma Road.

7. Life Savers -

In a city beleaguered by pet overpopulation, Memphis Animal Services employees last week prepared to euthanize a female Rottweiler whose heartworm-positive status in the kill-shelter had initially deemed her unadoptable.
