6. Council Tackles Budget, Tax Rate -

Memphis City Council members take their first steps Tuesday, May 7, toward approving a city operating budget and property tax rate for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

7. Harahan Bridge Project Plans Nearing Completion -

Design work on the “Main to Main Connector” project is at the halfway point. And the city team overseeing the project is due to complete plans by the end of May to trigger a $15 million appropriation of federal funding in June.

9. Metropolitan Bank Still Growing 5 Years In -

Metropolitan Bank has come a long way in five short years. Since being founded amid the worst financial crisis in the U.S. in generations, the bank – which in March celebrated its fifth birthday – has grown its assets from $243 million at the end of 2008 to $722 million at the end of 2012.

10. US Housing Starts Surpass 1 Million in March -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. homebuilders broke the 1 million mark in March for the first time since June 2008. The gain signals continued strength for the housing recovery at the start of the spring buying season.

11. U of M President Raines Announces Retirement -

Shirley C. Raines is retiring at the end of June after 12 years as president of the University of Memphis.

Raines announced her retirement Monday, April 15. John Morgan, the chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents, will name an interim president for the university possibly as early as this week for the transition.

12. Sales of New US Homes Slip 4.6 Percent in February -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Sales of new homes fell in February after climbing to the highest level in more than four years in January.

Sales of new homes dropped to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 411,000 in February, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. That is a decline of 4.6 percent from the January level of 431,000, which had been the strongest sales pace since September 2008.

The son of the former Memphis City Schools assistant principal at the center of a teacher testing cheating scandal became the 12th person in the federal case to plead guilty last week in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. sales of previously occupied homes rose in January to the second-highest level in three years, a sign that the housing market is sustaining its recovery and helping bolster the economy.

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. homebuilders began work at a slower pace in January than in December. But all of the drop occurred in the volatile area of apartment construction, which sank 24 percent. By contrast, the rate of single-family homebuilding rose 0.8 percent.

Pennsylvania-based Exeter Property Group has snatched up the Smucker’s distribution warehouse in West Memphis for $15.6 million.

The 600,000-square-foot facility was a foreclosed property from Bank of America, which was selling it with a year-end anticipated closing, said Matt Brodnik, Exeter’s director of capital markets.

Triumph Bank’s latest quarterly numbers are in, and the result is the bank ending comfortably in the black for the 14th straight quarter. The bank in recent weeks presented its second quarter financials to shareholders. And they included raising more than $12 million in new capital, money that was used to purchase investments and for other general corporate purposes.

35. Contracts to Buy US Homes Fell Slightly in August -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy previously occupied homes fell in August from a two-year high in July.

The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that its index of sales agreements dropped 2.6 percent last month to 99.2. In July, the index rose to 101.9. That was the highest level since April 2010, when the market benefited from a federal home-buying tax credit.

36. New US Home Sales Edged Down 0.3 Percent in August -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Sales of new homes in the United States dipped slightly in August from July but the median price of homes sold during the month rose by a record amount.

New-home sales edged down to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 373,000 in August, a dip of 0.3 percent from July's revised rate of 374,000, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That had been the fastest pace since April 2010 when government tax credits were boosting sales.

42. Contracts to Buy US Homes Hit 2-Year High in July -

Americans signed the most contracts to buy homes in July than at any other point in the last two years, further evidence of a housing recovery.

The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that its index of sales agreements for previously occupied homes jumped 2.4 percent in July to 101.7. That’s higher than June’s reading of 99.3. It’s also the highest reading since April 2010, the last month that buyers could qualify for a federal home-buying tax credit.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Americans bought more homes in July than in June, the latest evidence that the housing market is slowly, but steadily, improving.

Sales of previously occupied homes rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.47 million in July, a 2.3 percent increase from the previous month's rate, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday.

Memphis City Council members take a final vote Tuesday, July 17, on a Nov. 6 ballot question that would raise the local option sales tax rate in Memphis by half a percent.

The vote at Tuesday’s council session is on third and final reading of the referendum ordinance. 65. Grant to Enhance West Memphis Port -

The rails at the Port of West Memphis will meet the edge of the levee with $10.9 million in federal funding announced last week in Washington.

The port won funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of the TIGER – Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery – grant program.

66. Public-Private Partnership At Heart of Harahan Grant -

A New Jersey-based entity has purchased the 200-unit Country Oaks Apartments at 3865 Kirby Parkway for a little more than $6.7 million, or about $33,700 per unit. LCP Memphis LLC on Monday, June 21, closed on its deal for the 200-unit Hickory Hill complex from SATCA Ltd., the property’s owner since 2005.

71. West Memphis Port Gets TIGER Grant -

The Port of West Memphis was awarded a federal transportation grant of its own Tuesday, June 19.

Federal transportation officials awarded the Harahan Bridge project $15 million through the TIGER – Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery – program. The Harahan Bridge pedestrian and bicycle boardwalk is to line Main Street Memphis with Broadway Street, West Memphis’ version of Main Street.

Those who bought commemorative bricks outside The Pyramid more than 20 years ago can reclaim them at The Pyramid Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2 at the former arena.

The 12,539 bricks embedded in the sidewalk on the west side of Front Street are being removed as what was once an arena is converted into a Bass Pro Shops superstore with other attractions. The sidewalk area is expected to be part of a hunting lodge-like entrance to The Pyramid.

After 16 years, Stephen Shankman is leaving his post as federal public defender. He sent his notice to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati earlier this month saying he wants to opt out of another possible appointment by the appeals court to a new four-year term.

The block of Madison Avenue between Main and Second streets hasn’t been easy for quite a while.

It’s where the Main Street Trolley makes the turn to its Madison Avenue leg. It’s also where the trolleys sit idle for long periods of time seemingly unaware that they coexist with auto traffic. Residents of the Exchange Building who don’t have paid parking routinely park there instead, sometimes despite numerous tickets.

93. Drug Trial Moves Into Sentencing Phase -

The verdicts are in, and the jurors have been polled and dismissed after more than a month of trial.

The long-awaited and just-completed Craig Petties drug organization trial now gives way to sentencing hearings to come for Martin Lewis and Clinton Lewis and some of those who once belonged to the organization and testified against them.

94. Petties Jury Convicts on All but One Count -

The jury in the Petties drug organization trial has convicted the two defendants on all but one of the drug conspiracy, racketeering and murder-for-hire counts they faced.

Clinton Lewis and Martin Lewis were found guilty of 10 of the 11 federal charges they faced. The verdict came after less than a day of deliberation and five weeks of testimony.

95. Group Weighs Schools Logistics -

The city charter requires Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division to provide water to the Memphis City Schools system at no charge.

When MCS consolidates with the Shelby County Schools system in 2013, the merged system may have to pay a water bill as well as electric and gas bills. Or the free water may flow to the former county schools as well.
